With Evans have stood down we have some candidates
Paul Waugh @paulwaugh Both Eleanor Laing and @nadinedorriesmp to stand for Deputy Speaker when Commons returns on Tues, Standard reports.
Not sure the commons will self destruct.

Brian Binley has also announced, on the basis that he would be a stopgap pending the possible return of Nigel Evans.

I think that is the "done thing", yes. Though you do wonder what would happen if a LibDem decided they really wanted one of the deputy roles.....

It is reserved for a party in Government - Liberal Democrats are eligible.

very interesting move
Paul Waugh @paulwaugh Simon Burns, transport minister stepping down to run for Dep Speaker, No.10 source tells me
From what has been said, an anti Bercow candidate but surely Lab MP's would not vote him. He has been a flop as a transport minister so jumping before sacked.

I would quite like Simon "Bercow is a sanctimonious dwarf" Burns to be elected as deputy.....

I would rather someone sensible did it. I don't however have a strong view on Burns aside from him being a Tory. I think it is kind of Binley to say that but I don't see Evans being back in place this side of 2015.

For Labour MP's do they go for the most mischief making one like Dorries or someone like Amess who would be fairly neutral ?

I'm not sure it counts as mischief making anyway. The convention is that Deputy Speakers are supposed to shut up and get on with their job, whereas she can cause much more discord when she's mouthing off left, right and centre.

I agree, but then the Tories attempt to stop Bercow could have been viewed in the same way. I simply don't know how any Labour MP could vote for Mad Nad to do anything other than eat grubs on television. Eleanor Laing would be my choice. Independent minded backbencher, not notably partisan

As a Conservative who finds Dorries to be an utter embarrassment and liability, I can see the silver lining in her becoming Deputy Speaker. She'd have to keep her mouth shut.
