If Labour win this, then there will be a few record broken.
First by-election gain for Labour in Holyrood. First by-election win for Labour in Holyrood. First by-election gain for Labour from the SNP. First by-election gain for Labour in Scotland since Rutherglen in 1964.
Any other records which could be broken?

First by-election gain in Holyrood by any party since 2000 and only the second ever.

I was speaking to Bill Butler in Dunfermline only the other day too.

The TV hustings debate: player.stv.tv/programmes/scotland-tonight/2013-10-14-2230/Edit: Sorry, I see now that catholicleft had already posted this. I was sent a link by the LD campaign, on the back of which I have made a donation roughly equivalent to what it would have cost me in train fare and meals to make a personal visit to Dunfermline.

I spent most of today campaigning from a stall on the high street in Dunfermline, where I was joined at various points by the candidate, Patrick Harvie, Robin Harper and other activists. We've had canvassing teams of activists from across Scotland every weekend so far, and we'll be doing more over the last few days as well.
I met Shirley-Ann Somerville and John Swinney along with other activists campaigning on the high street this morning, handing out mini Saltires on what looked like lollipop sticks. John Mason MSP was around in the afternoon. Also saw a few SNP boards on houses and cars around Dunfermline.
Labour were apparently focusing entirely on Kincardine today. I saw no sign of their existence whatsoever.
Conservatives and LibDems both have offices in the centre of Dunfermline, but I didn't see anything of them otherwise.
UKIP also have an office in Dunfermline with lots of newspaper cuttings about immigration, the EU, windfarms etc. pasted to the window. A middle-aged couple spent about nine hours today walking backwards and forwards up and down the high street together carrying a UKIP board and trying to hand out leaflets. Lovely people (the sort who shake your hand and sincerely say 'God bless you' twice), but unable to articulate why they were campaigning for UKIP. I then briefly saw a small group of rather flamboyant UKIP activists -- including a man and a woman in cowboy hats, and a 30-something man dressed like Lord Lucan, who bounced down the street bellowing 'may I give you a leaflet sir?' in the predictable accent.

It will be interesting to see how their result compares to that in Donside. I think one major problem with UKIP's Donside campaign is that Farage played too large a part in it. He very much not only English but south east English. That meant that when he did things like famously starting the Aberdeen campaign in Edinburgh or in one interview forgetting the name of the 1967 Hamilton by election and calling it 'the Stirling By election' that gave exactly the wrong impression. My guess (and I would be interested to hear from Scottish posters here if they think I'm right) is that if UKIP Scotland are to make any headway at all then for a start they need to persuade more voters that they are Scottish unionists rather than simply unionists in Scotland.

I think you're right there. One thing really struck me about the banner on the UKIP office in Dunfermline. It read something to the effect of the following: 'LibDems, New Labour, "modern" Tories... all the same. That's why we're voting UKIP'.
Wait, I thought the SNP ran the administration relevant to this by-election?

Maybe it's an acknowledgement that they're not going to appeal to people who voted SNP, but can take votes off the other three.
FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised to see UKIP do a bit better than Donside here. They might save their deposit, but I doubt they'll top 7%.

Interesting experiences in Dunfermline so far. No one at all on the doorsteps is mentioning Walker, in any canvassing I have done and it seems to be the standard for everyone so far. Interesting that the Lab literature seems to have changed tact away from the early stuff which was just hammering on about this. Suspect they may be picking up that this isn't an issue as well? My canvassing has been quite mixed and hard to judge which way the wind is blowing, but I have spoken to other friends who are very experienced canvassers who reckon their canvassing results in Dunfermline so far are better than anything they were getting in Donside. SNP conference this weekend and we're running buses twice a day to and from Perth to keep up momentum. Have an idea that it might be closer than folk think. Some of us old hands can remember Ailean reporting back from canvassing in the Glenrothes by-election, where he reported that the canvassing returns from a street in a Labour core area were running 5 to 1 in favour of the SNP! I wasn't reporting my own canvassing experiences here (I've only been leafleting), just what others have been telling me.

I'm trying to avoid being overtly partisan, but this Labour leaflet from Dunfermline is one of the most misleading I've ever seen.
