There are three parishes in the Borough of Slough, which was transferred during local government reorganization in 1974 from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire and became a unitary authority in 1998 upon the abolition of Berkshire County Council.
In 1974, it was recognized that the urban development of Slough had spilled over into the adjacent parishes of Burnham and Wexham in Eton Rural District. These areas, drawn tightly around the built-up area, were transferred into Berkshire with Slough – whilst the bulk of the parishes of Burnham and Wexham remained and remain in the District of South Bucks in Buckinghamshire.
The parts of the parishes of Burnham and Wexham, transferred into Slough and Berkshire, became the successor parishes of Britwell and Wexham Court – and remain so to this day. They are part of the continuous built-up area of Slough and their existence is a historical accident.
Slough Borough Council has been conducting a community governance review since 1 February 2013 and reached the interim conclusion that Britwell and Wexham Court parishes should be abolished and the parish councils dissolved. Statutory guidance requires evidence of local support for abolition over at least a period equivalent to two terms of office of the parish councillors (i.e. eight years). Slough Borough Council is formally gauging views on the future of the parishes and also intends to test public opinion again in a further four years’ time. On 20 September, the Borough Council sent out a postal poll, asking a simple yes/no question of the residents – Do you support the option that Britwell/Wexham Court parish council be abolished? Ballots must be returned to Electoral Reform Services by 14 October.
The population of Wexham Court parish in the 2011 census was 5,340 and the electorate on yesterday’s Notice of Poll was 3,830.
Wexham Court parish council was Independent for many years. Dave Davies (Independent) served on the parish council for more than 21 years and was its chairman from 2006 to 2011. Carl Egan (Independent) was elected chairman in 2011. Dave Davies retired from the parish council in September 2012 and the parish council coopted a Labour nominee to replace him.
In May 2013, Sandy Malik (Lab) was elected chairman of the parish council in succession to Carl Egan.
Yesterday’s by-election was caused by the resignation of Peter Gerstmann (Independent). Labour nominated a candidate and Dave Davies came out of retirement to stand as an Independent. The result was a Labour gain from Independent, Lab 469, Independent 238.
The make-up of Wexham Court parish council is now: Lab 6, Independent 4, Co-opted 1
Slough Borough Council is also controlled by Labour.

He could have added the Coleford result if he had waited, too (of course, the FoD was a strong UKIP area in May)

Middlesbrough voted to keep an elected mayor by 8,674 to 6,455 poor sods Though surely, a Mayoral election in Middlesborough on the same day as a Parliamentary election 2015 would enhance the chances of a Labour win?

Guido is substantially over-egging it, of course. The UKIP results were pretty good, but mostly in places where their strength doesn't benefit them. They're taking disaffected anti-Labour votes in Barnsley, disaffected anti-Tory votes in Clacton and protest votes in rural West Sussex. None of those is a route to success. And the gain from Labour (or more correctly, Labour ever acquiring the relevant ward) has very little to do with party labels.

I have been puzzled by this The by election is noted as having been caused by the death of Labour Clr Jenny Dibsdall, but Labour did not contest the by, while a pervious by election was won unopposed by Indy Colin Dibsdall. Initially, I thought the Christian name was wrong in one or other post, but now wonder if this was a husband and wife team flying different colours, in which case I am puzzled, were they in disagreement or did a Labour member get elected under Indy colours ? can anyone throw light? Colin Dibsdall had stood as a Lib Dem for a number of years, most recently in 2003 and 2007 when he was elected with 80% plus of the vote. In 2011 he was returned unopposed as an Independent. When he died his widow, who reportedly was a member of the Labour Party, contested the first by-election in March 2012 winning under their colours with a 58% share against Conservatives on 34% and UKIP 8%. When she died some 15 months later, UKIP won this second by-election election with a 36% share against Labour 31%, Conservatives 23% and Lib Dems 10%.

Here is the background to the by-election in the Rossall ward of Fleetwood Town Council in Wyre Borough (Lancashire).
Fleetwood Town Council comprises 13 members elected from five wards – Mount (2), Park (2), Pharos (3), Rossall (3) and Warren (3).
The town wards are coterminous with the district wards of the same name.
Upon local government reorganization in 1974, the former municipal borough of Fleetwood became an unparished area. A new parish council was formed in June 2009, following a referendum. The first election was held on 4 June 2009.
The town council has been pointedly non-political, despite the Labour dominance of Fleetwood seats on Wyre Borough Council. At the 2007 borough elections, Labour had won 9 of the 13 borough seats in Fleetwood, with the Conservatives winning just 4 (1 in Park ward and the 3 in Warren ward). At the 2011 borough elections, Labour made a clean sweep of 13 borough seats in Fleetwood.
None of the sitting Borough councillors stood in the 2009 town council elections and only two candidates provided descriptions, 1 Independent and 1 (unsuccessful) BNP candidate.
In 2009 two of the successful Labour borough councilors were elected to the town council as No Description. The Conservatives fielded 5 candidates for the town council elections, with 2 elected (1 of them unopposed).
On 4 September 2013, the Fleetwood Weekly News reported that Labour’s Pharos ward Wyre councillors had produced a controversial leaflet, called A Call to Arms? The town council chairman accused Labour of trying to mount a take-over of the town council, but a Labour member dismissed the claims as a storm in a teacup. Tom Norton (a member of the public) said, “When I was chairman of the Fleetwood Action Group and was trying to get the town council going, the Conservative and Labour leaders promised they would not enter candidates under the banner of their parties”. He has vowed to fight the politicization of the town council.
The TUSC candidate, a former Labour councillor, forced the present by-election in Rossall ward. He said, “Since Fleetwood Town Council was set up, councilors have been ‘independent’. Political parties have hidden their real identity at election time. When councillors resigned, new ones were ‘co-opted’ without an election. I refused an offer of ‘co-option’ and called this election to end this anti-democratic disgrace”.
The council strengths were: Elections on 4 June 2009: No Description 12, Independent 1 Elections on 5 May 2011: No Description 8, Independent 2, Con 2, Vacant 1
The current chairman and vice-chair of the council are No Description.
On 21 June 2011, the town council co-opted Bill Barrow to fill the vacancy in Mount ward.
On 25 October 2011, the town council co-opted Stephen Cowen to fill the vacancy in Pharos ward, following the resignation of Tom Dewhirst, after becoming disillusioned with the organisation.
On 29 January 2013, the town council co-opted Lucy MacNeill to fill the vacancy in Pharos ward, following the resignation of Stephen Cowen, due to work commitments.
The result of the election in Rossall on 4 June 2009 (3 seats) was: No Description 938/696/561, 557/515/499/434 Elected: No Description 3
The result of the election in Rossall on 5 May 2011 (3 seats) was: No Description 869/792, Independent 737, Con 657/652/593 Elected: No Description 2, Independent 1
The present by-election was caused by the resignation of Bob Winston (No Description).
The result was Con 330, No Description 287, TUSC 235 Con gain from No Description
The new make-up of the council is No Description 6, Independent 2, Con 3, Co-options 2
The result in the Rossall ward of Wyre Borough Council on 3 May 2007 was Lab 826/790/737, Con 632/631/539, UKIP 394 Elected – Lab 3
The result in the Rossall ward of Wyre Borough Council on 5 May 2011 was Lab 841/801/758, Con 698/684/655, UKIP 320/233, Independent 193 Elected – Lab 3
