Liberal Democrats reject STV! I'm just amazed given how we've managed to fu.ck most things up lately we didn't end up with a three way tie.

Would have been funny if it were the three leaders' heirs though!

The Great Earl was a kind of genius, albeit of a fascinatingly horrible kind. His children, Hon. Robert Boyle and Lady Katherine Boyle were geniuses pure and simple, and later members of the family like William Kent's patron the 3rd Earl of Burlington were far from insignificant.

A late Norman-English invader, intent on crushing the Irish, was not 'great' if you were an Irish Catholic. Whig history is nonsense in its treatment of Ireland. Oliver Cromwell was a big fan.

Very late - he arrived in Ireland in 1588.

One of his ancestors also gave the beautiful name 'Orrery' to a model of the solar system.

I've heard the name used by a few astronomy programmes but I hadn't made the connecttion.

There is a vacancy in the peers elected by the whole House following the death of Lord Lyell on Tuesday. Charles Lyell, 3rd Baron Lyell became a member of the House of Lords on his 21st birthday in 1960, taking his seat in 1961 and was elected in 1999. He was a whip and junior minister in the 1980s and later a deputy speaker. Lyell succeeded to the title aged four in 1943 when his father was killed in action in Tunisia.
The peerage, created in 1914, and baronetcy, created in 1894, are now extinct.

This is sad. Charlie was a delight, one of the pleasantest Tories in the House, and fuller of anecdotes than anyone I have known.
Although it is a by-election of the whole House (he was one of the ?16 elected in 1999 as a potential officer of the House) and any eligible hereditary peer (who is not already a member of the Lords) can stand and be elected, under the Carter Convention the winner should be a Conservative. This will be "arranged" in the usual way.

The peerage, created in 1914, and baronetcy, created in 1894, are now extinct. It appears the 2nd baron had a sister, so the 3rd baron may well have had cousins who could've inherited the peerage if only the government had made time for the Succession to Peerages Bill to pass by now.
