Daniel Cohn-Bendit usually switches between being a German MEP and a French MEP: 1994 as German MEP, 1999 as French MEP, 2004 as German MEP and 2009 as French MEP.

David Steel stood in Italy in 1989 and I think was the first to stand outside his home country. How many have been elected from outside their home country? James Goldsmith is the only one I can think of immediately. Perhaps a German in Spain? Spain is one constituency, so the vote would be too divided to get a candidate through from the 17th Bundesländer of Mallorca. If it was divvied up by region, perhaps UKIP would get on the Costa del Sol.

There would be a certain, magnificent irony in Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol being represented by MEPs from the same party. Especially if it was indeed UKIP.

There's allegedly around a million Brits living in Spain. If they all voted things could get very interesting.
I wonder if the number of French folk in London could affect results there.

The City State has gone right out of fashion since the mid-19th century.

Too true. As have Free Cities as well. I think Danzig put people off. True, but I'd think that Fiume would attract people. The thought of having my own statelet, which I govern in between shagging and writing very florid poetry, is quite appealing. More seriously, part of me thinks that we should never have let Italy and Yugoslavia carve up Trieste.

I do like the way the Old Town has been rebuilt. I can imagine it is a bit miserable in the winter. My inner German still thinks that it should be Triest, capital of the Kronland Österreichisches Küstenland.
