Does anyone know what the correct result was for Beverley & Holderness in 1997? About half the references seem to say the Tory majority was 811, the other half 1,211...
A PA News error I think. Correct votes for Norman John O'Neill (Labour) was 20,418 as given on page 9 of the Return of Election Expenses (HC 260 1998-99) and on page 12 of "Britain Votes 6" by Rallings and Thrasher.
Incorrect figure of 20,818 probably has wider circulation incl Times Guide.
For each election I am calculating the number of reelected MPs, those no reelected (and how many retirements and defeated), the number of new MPs, retreads and first time electees. For 2010 this was 418 reelected, 232 new (5 retreads with 227 first timers), 225 not reelected (149 retired and 76 defeated).
I have gone back to 1970 currently, the most reelectees was in Oct 74 with 589, there has been only one occasion where the figure was below 400 (399 in 1997).
