Interesting electoral facts

The present-day London Borough of Barnet, despite being the major centre of UK Jewish population, has yet to elect any Jewish MPs despite a number of past candidates some of whom have come close. This is widely expected no longer to be the case after the forthcoming general election. The neighbouring London Boroughs of Brent, Harrow & Camden have all had Jewish MPs. (I should add that Andrew Dismore, although he does have relatives who are Jewish, is not himself Jewish.)

One of Poulson's "contacts" was National Liberal MP Sir Herbert Butcher, through whom Poulson was introduced to the party - which was by then a hollowed-out shell. Butcher had revived the National Liberal Forum as a discussion group and Poulson agreed to fund it, which enabled him to meet other senior politicians. That included, fatefully, Reginald Maudling. Poulson also became Chairman of the National Liberal Executive from 1964 until the party disbanded in 1968.

bump, because of the question in the other thread.

I went to Google (and thence to Wikipedia) to try to find quickly a total number of the candidates in the 2019 general election, but Wikipedia told me 3,415 and 3,322 on the same page. These totals are always difficult to add up, let alone to find or remember years later. No doubt there are detailed lists elsewhere in the forum when we added them up,at the time, but scattered in different threads and sectioms.

I knew Andy Dismore from back in the 1980s.

I know him from being my predecessor, constituent, and still active member of the local party.

I knew him when he was a shaggily bearded young man in the Barnes ward of my CLP. He looked nothing remotely like he does today. Our paths have very occasionally crossed since; some of his family members in Barnes signed my nomination papers in 2002 as did Roger McGough & his wife Hilary round the corner from there.

In the last parliament, surely for the first time ever, following the retirement of Sir Kevin Barron there were more Tory MPs called Kevin than Labour ones, Kevin Brennan being the last Labour MP of that name. Although he is retiring, what are the chances of this being repeated in a month's time?

Kevin Bonavia is very likely to be elected for Labour, but both Kevin Foster and Kevin Hollinrake have seats that ought to be safe unless the Tories are clearly in third.

That, I have to say, is a top obscure electoral fact and I am going to re-use it.

The Official Monster Raving Loony candidate in Falmouth and Camborne in 1997 was 'Gary Glitter'. I imagine the gentleman concerned returned to the deed poll paperwork pretty sharpish not very long afterwards.

It was pretty much wound up by the 1948 Woolton-Teviot agreement as I recall; it was a label that suited some MPs and constituencies where there was felt to be some sort of Con-Lib crossover politics with influence on the local electorate, or - I suspect - local funds or legacies that were specifically National Liberal. Until surprisingly late on a lot of Nonconformist provincial businessmen didn't embrace a Conservative identity and liked to think they had a connection with old-style Liberalism. One of these was... John Poulson. Poulson effectively took charge of the National Liberal organisation and used it as a way of meeting and ingratiating himself with people on the Conservative side of politics (he had Dan Smith as intermediary with Labour councils in the North East and Yorkshire) in particular).
