Every Conservative to gain a seat in a by-election while the Tories have been in office has been a woman since the '60s: Angela Rumbold (Mitcham & Morden 1982) Trudy Harrison (Copeland 2017) Jill Mortimer (Hartlepool 2021) Not getting my hopes up or anything, but a Labour (re)gain in Hartlepool at the next GE would be amusing wouldn't it? Wherein lies the humour? I know why you want to win it of course. Legitimate and vulnerable target. But why 'funny'?

Legitimate and vulnerable target. But why 'funny'? Because of the sheer scale of the Tory win in the byelection, even before we get to the near-iconic status it attained.

No Republican presidential candidate has won the state they were born in since Bob Dole won Kansas in 1996.
George W Bush was born in Connecticut, John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, Mitt Romney was born in Michigan, and Donald Trump was born in New York.

Bernie Sanders' seat has never had a Democratic Senator.
The last time each state without a Republican Senator voted for one:
Arizona 2016 California 1988 Colorado 2014 Connecticut 1982 Delaware 1994 Georgia 2016 Hawaii 1970 Illinois 2010 Maryland 1980 Massachusetts 2010* Michigan 1994 Minnesota 2002 Nevada 2012 New Hampshire 2010 New Jersey 1972 New Mexico 2002 New York 1992 Oregon 2002 Rhode Island 2000 Vermont 2000 Virginia 2002 Washington 1994

Surprises in the above lists - New Jersey not having voted Republican since Nixon's landslide. It is far from a Democratic lock in Presidential politics. Jon Corzine only won it in 2000 by spending a large part of his considerable fortune, and Frank Lautenberg only narrowly survived in 1994. Christine Todd Whitman nearly pulled off an unlikely win in 1990.
Maine not having voted for a Democrat since 1988 is a surprise but the consistent way Maine Republicans have selected moderate candidates has been the key to that.

Even if its a traditionally safe GOP state (though intriguingly becoming less so now) Kansas going back to the 1930s is pretty remarkable.

Talking of electorates, the local elections electorate for Fairfield ward in Croydon is now 10,595. In 2018 it as 8,471. When the new ward boundaries were drawn in the run up to the 2018 election, it was deliberately made with an electorate much smaller than other 3-member wards, because a big increase in electorate over the next 5-10 years was projected. This increase in electorate has now materialised.
Apart from anything else, the turnout (number, not percentage) in the by-election in Fairfield ward (a 3-member ward) in 2019 was lower than in the by-election in Park Hill & Whitgift ward (a 1-member ward) in 2021.

And if you're wondering what's going on in the sw of the state With the added info that the Hispanic share of CVAP - lagging well behind share of the total pop - is rising yearly.
