An old friend of mine has the surname Lush, and remarkably, given the huge range of names they could have chosen, his parents gave him a middle name beginning with F. Well done on thinking & avoiding giving your son a slightly unfortunate name. Similarly, a couple in my extended family have just given their new child the initials W.C. Didn't do Mr Fields any harm.

I have a friend with the surname Head. His parents chose Richard as his first name. He answers to Rich. A friend was at school with the daughter of Mr and Mrs Royds who they had named Emma. I bet she was a ‘pain in the arse’? My aunt was nearly named Melanie Ann Dawn Jackson. It was modified to Melanie Dawn Ann before registration.

Didn't do Mr Fields any harm. oh my, you have reminded me of my wonderful friend Agnes, a remarkable woman who has survived both the Holocaust & the Hungarian Uprising and who has been my friend for over 50 years. She was an engineering academic and I remember her telling me that she had to phone a (I seem to remember) rather early computer company. She was told that she had to speak to a Commander Lillicrap. She was convinced that she was not receiving accurate information, but the company said that indeed that was the person she needed to speak to. Some days later she attempted to get in touch with Commander Lillicrap, but was told that he was not available that day. She asked who would be the person she now needed to speak to, and was astonished and disbelieving that she was told that she had to speak another man called W.C.Motion. Again she refused at first to believe that that could be the case, but the company insisted that there was such a person working there.

Which reminds me of the elderly Welsh couple who sold their cottage to an English buyer who asked for details of the W.C. - a term which, as first language Welsh speakers, they found tricky to understand, finally deciding that it must be a reference to the Wesleyan Chapel. Their reply read - "regarding the WC it's about a mile away, but nearer if you cut across the fields".

It was modified to Melanie Dawn Ann before registration. A similar one, and then several more. A distant family member had a daughter who was about to get christened and the night before the ceremony her grandmother had a dream about the first day at school with a brand new school bag marked with the initials of 'Amy Patricia Evans'. Until that moment nobody had spotted it. Collette is now 31. The editor of the Huddersfield Examiner, who I think is still there, used to work in an adjacent office to me where the nameplate on the door gloried in telling people it was for Wayne Ankers. He once told me that a local Rugby League player probably fared even worse with the name Wayne Kerr. Then there is one I didn't believe so I have just checked it. There's a gent in Newcastle called William Wonker. Nearly forgot. On holiday in Devon once and reading the local rag. The Announcement page displayed all the recent weddings, one of them where young Mister Alcock had married Miss Balls. As my own grandmother would say, "they'd spoil another couple."

It reminds me of the former UKIP leader Richard Braine who was know by many as Dick I have a friend with the surname Head. His parents chose Richard as his first name. He answers to Rich. I also went to school with a Richard Head, he was fairly handy with his fists and we called him Richard or Rich. He joined the army as an Rupert, but sadly he left as a Captain, we were looking forward to him becoming a Major. This, of course, is all puerile, but I did walk 300m out of my way to photograph the street sign for Wankstraße in Berlin-Britz, so I plead guilty.

For ages I was sure one of either Anthony and Murray Head was called Richard. As in "is Richard Head the one in Buffy or the one in Chess?"

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is home to the Wank mountain. There is a proposal to build a tunnel under it to relieve traffic pressure. Cue lots of posters featuring the word "Wanktunnel". The mountain itself has a chair lift, and once you've bought your Wank Tickets, there are all manner of Wank offerings. zugspitze.de/de/Unsere-Bergwelten/Die-Gebiete/Panoramaberg-Wank

Yes, Manchester United lost there in amusing fashion. One City forum noted it with the headline: "Ronaldo gets himself Wankdorfed by Young Boys".

Time to cease 'Silly Boy's 5th Form National Jerk-Off Week' and get back to Local Council Elections I think.

There is, I submit, a difference between "unfortunate" combinations within one's own language (Emma Royds, Dick Head) and laughing at words that are rude in English but innocuous in the language which deploys them.
