As I understand it the area counts for the GLA will be run by the borough designated as the Returning Officer, but local byelections will be counted by their own borough. But all the ballot papers go in the same box? No they don’t, but there is always the possibility that a few dilly voters might accidentally put their ballot papers in the wrong box. For that reason, the local by-election counts will need to be counted in the same location as the GLA counts, so that the different ballot boxes can be checked for cross-contamination. So the individual borough staff will count the by-elections separately, albeit in the same location.

And pretty much every polling station had at least one ballot that was placed in the wrong box.

(Or else a ballot paper design problem.) Voters are idiots, if you hand them ballot papers for two elections only one of which they care about, and tell them what they are, they can not be expected to remember that a minute later. They may plausibly conclude that the other piece of paper is a protective envelope.

St Helier West in Sutton - I hear Labour very down on their chances to hold the seat. Seems a very muted campaign from them compared to a lively defence in West Putney.

West Putney is nevertheless a far from straightforward defence.

There appears to be continuing fallout from the resignation of the sitting councillor and problems within her group. Sadiq also an issue on the door and a drag on their vote.
The scale of activity in the ward suggests it is between the LDs and the Tories.

Just realised today that I'm poll clerk for the Knights Hill election in Lambeth.
4 different ballot papers to explain, easy.

Did they also up your pay for your troubles? I'm getting a slight bonus due to the hassle of an extra ballot paper.

Yes, though we don't have a competition for the May election day byelections.

Will this site be reporting on by-election results as they are announced? Yes. They stopped doing them 40-minutes before they are announced two years back when told that was illegal!

Thanks The Bishop and Carlton43, I will check in periodically on Friday, though I suppose some might report Thursday night too.
