Local Council by-elections - 2nd May 2024 - London

[timrollpickering]

A subset of the many elections on this day are fifteen by-elections in London across twelve boroughs and ten London Assembly constituencies (I am relieved to be agent in one of the other four). All are caused by resignations except for Deptford in Lewisham which is caused by the councillor's direct election as Mayor of the borough. I've grouped them by Assembly constituency because of the elections on the same day.

Are the by-election counts being done by the London Elects team, as has happened in previous years?

As I understand it the area counts for the GLA will be run by the borough designated as the Returning Officer, but local byelections will be counted by their own borough.

In recent years they've done the count for by-elections and borough referendums at the same place as the Assembly seat but (where relevant) the actual borough's electoral services have run the specific count instead of the Assembly lead borough.

Corrected against LB Sutton's website. It's quite confusing when the same party takes first and ninth place with only 146 votes separating those two candidates.

And I suppose this is as good a thread as any to note that another oddity of the London Mayor & Assembly elections is a different set of nomination deadlines. Those closed last Wednesday but council elections have a further five working days and will close this Friday.

St Helier and West Putney look to be the most interesting races of the bunch. It will also be interesting to see if the Greens can pull off a close result in De Beauvoir after the last by election.

They would be done by the boroughs where the wards are, but they need to be done in the same location because of the possibility of cross-contamination of ballot papers between the two different types of ballot boxes.

At the Croydon Conservative AGM last week, it was pointed out that the Park Hill & Whitgift by-election (in which I will be voting) is the most important election we have on 2nd May. Of Labour were to gain the seat, Labour would get a majority on the planning committee, and would be be able to re-start their Ceausescu-style policy of building blocks of flats on every square inch of spare land.

The Bromley seat looks interesting too, with Con, Lab and LD all reasonably close, if not quite on the Sutton contest scale

No not exactly. St Helier was in 2018, albeit very marginal with Labour, but boundary changes created new wards of St HE and St HW, so not directly comparable

St Helier West very closely resembles the old St Helier ward boundaries. Wandle Valley ward was split in two to form the new Hackbridge and St Helier East wards, with small parts of The Wrythe added to the new Hackbridge.

Perhaps not for the Greens on this occasion, as one spanner in the works is that a former Labour Councillor in a neighbouring ward, who resigned from the party before the 2022 locals and stood as an independent (and nearly won a seat), is again standing as an independent here. Labour are apparently whipping their Councillors to campaign heavily in the ward.

The deadline for nomination papers is today - we tried to submit ours yesterday but couldn't, as the officer was on annual leave and her deputy was also off work. Assuming there's someone in the office to receive our papers today our candidate is Mike Denniss, who was a Councillor in Chiswick 2018-22 and stood in this ward in 2022.

Pelling polled better among normally Conservative voters than Labour voters in the mayoral election, especially around Shirley and Park Hill.  If Valerie Shawcross had won the mayoral election, Pelling's candidacy would been a large factor in that.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was the Lib Dem candidate here in May...

Interesting. Theo’s vote tally in 2022 in Syon & Brentford Lock ward was impressive but he would have had more name recognition there as it was the successor ward to Syon that he previously represented as a Labour councillor. While there are some voters in the current Brentford West ward that were previously in the old Syon ward, they would be very much in the minority.
