As mentioned by elinorhelyn in the post-GE byelection thread: Tower Hamlets, Bow East (2026). Rachel Blake (Labour) has resigned. She is the new MP for Cities of London & Westminster. One of a hat-trick of London Green gains I think, along with London Fields and Stoke Newington.

It is certainly true that Stuart Hughes, then of the Raving Loony Green Giant Party, was elected to East Devon District Council, representing Sidmouth Woolbrook ward, in 1991. However the rest of johnloony's description of the programme does not fit the District Council election. In the previous election in 1987 the three member ward had full slates from both Labour and the Conservatives and a single Alliance candidate, with no Independent candidates; two of the Tories and one Labour candidate were elected. In 1991 there were eight candidates: full slates from the Tories (two seats) and the RLGGP (one seat) and single candidates from Labour (not the candidate elected in 1987) and the Lib Dems. Maybe the programme was about Sidmouth Town Council? As it happens, I made a contemporaneous note of the result in question. As it happens, I remembered that I had it somewhere. As it happens, I’ve just been through my files, and I found it. The text of what I wrote was:It is possible that it might have actually been “Sidmouth Town Council” rather than Parish council, because in 1991 I wouldn’t have been consciously aware of any distinction between the two and I might have written it down wrongly. Because of my lifestyle of not throwing away clutter, I’m not surprised that I still had it or that I found it; I am surprised that it has as much information as it does. i.e. that I bothered to write down the surnames and not just the numbers.

Northumberland, Cramlington Eastfield (Aug. 22nd) :
James Gillooly (Lab) Mark David Owen (Reform) Alan Smith (Con)
Mr Owen seems to be the first Reform candidate of the new parliament.
Labour is taking the pending Bridges by-election in Gateshead seriously - I have been asked if I want to be considered to be the candidate! (But perhaps everyone has.)

Also candidates running for the Lib Dems, Greens and two separate independents. I made the mistake of taking the list from The Journal as exhaustive. Silly me.

Lancaster, Scotforth East (2027). Sophie Maddocks (Labour) has ceased to be a councillor. Which puts Labour and Greens on 22 councillors each with Greens the challenger here, having missed gaining the second seat by three votes in 2023.

Methinks that one is geographically protected.

Methinks that one is geographically protected. I don't think it is specifically required, but an exception permitting (and I think the intent was clearly to encourage it) it was created in the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018 - www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2018/12

There must be something in the water in Highland- that will be 9 by elections since March 2021. In similar size councils, Edinburgh has had 1, Aberdeenshire 2 and Glasgow 4

Just driving to meetings from home must be a significant time/energy drain for some councillors, depending on where they live in the Highlands.

Must be a 3-4 hour drive each way to Inverness (I assume that's the HQ?) from some locations, even on the mainland. Like a council stretching from London to Crewe!

(I'd also forgotten that the road journey is sometimes much shorter than the rail journey.)
