We had been working this seat for a long time and getting positive feedback, even before Zahawi announced that he was standing down. The ground was prepared last year if not before.

Clarkson must have thought it was worth the ‘chicken run’ though

Clarkson must have thought it was worth the ‘chicken run’ though Not sure that "chicken run" is entirely fair when his previous seat had been carved up and he was more or less obliged to find a new home, but if he had a choice this was not the best one, and he clearly did not do the research on it.

Yeah the quotation marks were because it might not be entirely a fair description If I remember correctly he wasn’t someone known to be seeking another seat and this came about a bit suddenly

I think you do remember correctly. I remember him saying he wouldn’t stand again, then suddenly we heard he had fled further south.

I think saying his previous seat had been carved up was a gross exaggeration by him. It had a Labour ward added from Rochdale and lost a ward and a half - both Labour - to Blackley. The major core of it remained the same as it was. Admittedly it has changed it from a Tory seat to a notional Labour one but it had hardly been carved up. He even used the explanation for standing down that it had been 'abolished'.
