Yeah, we all know Labour are currently fond of the national flag but it doesn't and shouldn't belong solely to the right - still less the far right.

Yeah, we all know Labour are currently fond of the national flag but it doesn't and shouldn't belong solely to the right - still less the far right. The problem is that the Left actively sneers at and repudiates the national flag. And claims that you are 'far right' (of course!) if you display it. My wife used to work for a Labour council. All staff were told not to display the flag... even in their own cars.

The Union Flag is the flag of the whole UK, not of any local council. A staff member instructed never to display it at all would have misinformed but one who wanted to fly it all the time would also be failing to follow guidelines. I presume "her car" in the above case means either a company car or her own car while on official council business. If told not to display a flag in a private vehicle for personal journeys/commuting then that was indeed wrong and could've been taken to a tribunal. And no, the original intention of right's post didn't fly over my head. A lot of these leaflets he's been sharing have been amusing enough without additional commentary and I commend his efforts.

It wasn't just cars on official business. It was private cars in private use: far overstepping the council's legal authority

Wow. I'm stunned by this result. I thought this would go the same way as Sutton Coldfield, Aldridge brownhills and the Solihull constituencies and be more resilient to the national swing. I know that Labour have a history of local government representation here, and that big chunks of this seat voted Labour in the past but still.

I do wonder if the good burghers of Lichfield may have concluded that Fabricant had outstayed his welcome in a way that people like the much more serious Andrew Mitchell had not and whether this was a bit of a personal rejection. After Johnson and Truss it appears there wasn't much patience at this election for clown-like politicians.
