We were on holiday last week with some friends, 2 of whom live in Southport. They are very disappointed that Southport has a Labour MP for the first time. They said that they are going to join the Conservative Party as a result ( I doubt they will) and it will hopefully be the first and last time it elects a Labour MP. I told them that it almost certainly won’t be, and that it could well move to being a reliable Labour seat over time.
Interestingly they don’t feel Southport has changed much over the last 30/40 years, which I’m surprised about, as politically at least there is a general acknowledgement of a wider Merseyside effect. Maybe there has been political change without huge amounts of demographic change, but I’m not sure that is the case.
