Why would Damien Moore have a negative personal vote compared to a generic Conservative MP? Not saying I was a fan especially but he didn't strike me as unusually toxic compared to most of his Parliamentary colleagues. I was mostly speculating based on the percentage change in the Conservative vote, however I also never got the impression that he was particularly popular locally (though this will have been exacerbated by the particular dynamics here, and I do confess to being somewhat biased as well). |

Especially evil as people are trying to enjoy a nice spell of weather in these parts - the impact on the families - I dread to think. This is not the USA, FFS. These things just aren't occurrences here, until they are, with devastating consequences. I have friends with family up here - it's truly horrid. My prayers with Southport.

Appalling. Heaven knows what the motive was, and how did he even know of the event? All will become clear. We mourn the two dead children & hope & pray for those who are fighting for their lives. Reported to be by a "17 year old boy from Banks in Lancashire. Ali Al-Shakati came over from boat from France last year claiming to be underage. Who knows, perhaps he was. Also not confirmed whether he was on an extremist watch list. Motive is reported that he was mentally unstable. There's no clue in Ali Al-Shakati's background to any ethnic, religious or political animus that would lead someone to stabbing a load of children in a dance workshop. If this is a terrorist incident then I doubt that all will become clear if it can be helped. And I'm inclined to think that that is right, perhaps we do need to paper over these events to stop there being a backlash. |

But being a second (or third) generation immigrant brings up different, and still worrying. There's also not the same (perhaps overly) simple solution that the boats have. |

Additionally, 'al-Shakati' doesn't even seem to be a real surname.
According to The Telegraph, his parents were originally from Rwanda and moved with their son to Banks when he was six, which would also largely preclude the possibility of him having an Arabic name anyway.

I followed the event live on Twitter basically all of yesterday; that site wasn't the original source of the purported name of the attacker (all that seems to have happened is that they picked it up from various Twitter accounts and consequently helped to signficantly amplify it)

I think this and other recent incidents means that the police are going to have to rethnk their information policy. Rumours now run wild on social media, can be manipulated by bad actors, and the eventual emergence of the truth may be unseen or disbelieved.
It is surely possible to release more information about the perpetrator in these cases, without giving a name, or enough detail that the person can easly be identified.

The problem there is that it would be very easy for the wrong person to be identified. In the Gylfi Sigurdsson case, there were two "married 31-year-old Everton players who have played for their country". And the other one was black, so people jumped to the wrong conclusion. |
