This would have been fertile territory, even more so than Leigh, for Andy Burnham, but unlikely given his recent re-election as Mayor. Burnham has had a go at making it to the very top of national politics and it didn't work out too well. Now he's in a position where he's more popular than almost all MPs could ever be and he'd be silly to give that up for another shot at Westminster politics.

Worked out well for Johnson though (until it all came down). Plus he was still mayor for another year when elected back to parliament in 2015 - there was no mayoral by-election.

Why become a small fish in a big pond when you are already a big fish in a small pond?

Why become a small fish in a big pond when you are already a big fish in a small pond? Because I want to help the big pond win elections.

Burnham is far more powerful as Mayor than MP.

Seems like an odd fit for Makerfield (if he has no local links that is, which seems to be the case) , appears better suited to Islington North? Similarities with Mandelson in Hartlepool? And before anyone says, yes Andy Burnham did go to Cambridge and worked as a Labour advisor in London but at least he grew up next to Leigh…

I'm not sure he's meaningfully less local than Nandy was, and she doesn't seem to have had any problem getting established locally in Wigan.

Mandelson was quite well-liked in Hartlepool, certainly more so than his predecessor, who was a local.

Why not? Local people know the local area and can be attractive to local voters. This is a very insular constituency, it's barely connected to Wigan let alone Greater Manchester more generally. Sometimes seats aren't suited to outsiders with parachute and influence.

Good Lord dok, you make it sound like it's on the dark side of the moon.
"This is a local seat for local people".

Some parts of Lancashire are like that. Very insular, difficult road and rail connections, tend to work close to family, can't always afford to move to Manchester at the best of times never mind these days. Just thinking of my office, the majority of us are Preston born, Preston educated, very few of us travel very often. That's common, very common.

Despite having the premier railway station in Lancashire and a bus station?
