Reminds me of 2001, when a right-wing Conservative councillor in Croydon (Peter Campbell) stood in East Ham. I noticed that he was on the list of candidates, but he kept it quiet and it caused some amusement among other Croydon councillors when they saw him on TV at the declaration and only then realised.

SOPNThe usual five, plus TUSC, CPA, and Newham Independents. The latter is Sophia Naqvi, a Newham borough councillor who won the Plaistow North by-election last November. She was a Labour / Momentum activist but resigned last October after Starmer's initial reaction to Gaza.

While Sophia probably won’t win, I think she will get a very respectable number. In general though Newham Labour seem to be a right mess, apparently they have had 10% of their councillors leave for one reason or another in the span of two years. If they aren’t careful, with these newham independents around, they could be looking at another tower hamlets situation.

I agree with your comment about Newham Independents being another Aspire type of party. I still think Labour would still very safely hold the council at the next locals (it’s not quite the same borough as Tower Hamlets), however the Newham Independent Group could get a good rump of say 10 to 15 councillors.

I wouldn't have thought very many would come from this constituency mind. East Ham would seem much more fertile ground for them.

The Newham Independents have done well in the strongly Muslim Wards such as Plaistow North and Boleyn. They got nowhere in Wall End which is my patch. The Ward is strongly Hindu so no Palestine flags for example while they've been flying in Plashet. I think a by election in Plashet or Green Street East now would be very interesting and we have a by election in Little Ilford on July 18th which will be hard fought. As for 2026, I imagine the Newham Independents will trade on discontent with the Labour Government and on the abysmal record of Roksana Fiaz so yes there are plenty of potential targets - I could certainly see 18-20 councillors for them with the Greens keeping their two and perhaps doing something in Forest Gate.

I find it hard to believe these people didn’t know that this is what Reform was all about?
