What an absurd woman and what an absurd bunch of people that she represents. Michaela Trite would be more an apt name So, she likes gentrification, but not *too* much gentrification? And she gets to decide how much is too much...? I'm inclined to agree with you, Pete.

What they actually mean by "gentrified" isn't that it isn't a shithole anymore, rather than its a shithole that also has some low income but pretentious people who think they are better than everyone because they are spending every penny they don't have on being part of the "urban elite", the real members thereof who wouldn't be seen dead in Walthamstow.
The same people who have those ridiculous indoor shutters you only see in London. If you want shutters, put them on the outside, and get your windows to open the other way.
People who say absurd things like "I don't feel guilty that my property has tripled in value because of gentrification... everyone should be able to afford to live here. "

I understand that at one point Gail's were quite major donors to the Conservative Party, but I don't think they are now. I can't find any record of that - Luke Johnson certainly was but in a personal rather than a corporate capacity I think.

" The average property prices in Walthamstow, and neighbouring Hackney which is rather similar if a little further along, are now on par with actually nice parts of the capital. The median price paid in the central part of Walthamstow (not the village) was £515,000 - exactly the same as East Putney and just £10,000 less than Rotherhithe... I know which of those three I'd choose to live in and which I wouldn't!

I don’t think I’ve heard of Gail’s bakery before, but now I want to go to it just to annoy the people who don’t understand how market forces work.

I actually buy their bread regularly, usually from Waitrose but occasionally from the Gail's branch near Kew Gardens station. It's actually very good. I have never sat down to have refreshments at a branch, except once when the company paid for it during a work supervision, in Queen's Park.

If you visit them all, your tour will include lots of Lib Dem constituencies. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/07/11/lib-dems-upmarket-bakery-gails-operation-cinnamon-bun/(paywalled but you get the drift) On the topic of "gentrification", I don't see the problem with areas of cities becoming less poor. Better than the alternative of them becoming more poor?

Yep. There are 2 Gail's within a mile of my house. And I am in a safe Lib Dem constituency.

Better than the alternative of them becoming more poor? As a general rule I don't either, but I do sympathise with the argument that gentrification ultimately doesn't solve the issue of poverty, it just moves it somewhere else. I don't think there's a silver bullet for that kind of problem though.

Gail's gives white yummy mummy vibes. Look where they have their outlets. Muswell Hill, Highgate, Crouch End, Hampstead... They have one in Kentish Town! That shows you where its going. Jolene is better in Islington / Hackney. A much more alternative vibe there. They handwrite their stuff too y'know. They have low-level lighting as well. Gail's is crap, to be honest. Their 'too good to go' bags. It was a waste of money. Gail's can do one, I say. They started in Hampstead - enough said.

Well their bread, irrespective of their clientele or vibes, is actually pretty good. Those who don't want to set foot in one of their bakeries can buy it at Waitrose.

We just thought it'd be cheaper. I mean, end of the day. They do too good to go. But it's still quite pricey though. Still, I live off reduced Aldi! We shopped at Waitrose on benefits. Make it make sense batman, lol.

I do confess to going in once, (Wimbledon I think), but fairly often got their bread on discount from Waitrose.

Best baker in Richmond Park constituency is the Swiss Bread bakery and café in Ham, although they are open only five days a week and shut for the whole of August. Paul is a better choice than Gail's for a chain bakery.

Jolene scorches both but it's small.
