What time are we expecting results tonight? 'Tonight'? I think it's going to be a while.
Mail-in ballots won't start to be counted until Tuesday.

What time are we expecting results tonight? IIRC Atlantic Canada starts dribbling through, booth by booth, pretty quickly after midnight in Newfoundland and Labrador, however, in a break with the past, mail votes, of which there are nearly 1 million, aren’t being counted until tomorrow, so in close-ish Ridings we may well not get definitive results until Tuesday.

A bit late to this, but apparently most/all the provincial polling that many election observers take very seriously and use to judge the credibility of pollsters is low 100s subsamples from national polling. Yeah...

One of the odd things about Canadian election results broadcasting is the way everyone seems to regard the first votes from a Riding as being massively significant in showing which way things are going, even when the number of votes is tiny.

I've just read a CBC piece that talks about the "blue wall" in Calgary and Edmonton. Is nowhere safe!?

I guess it gives them something to talk about. Whereas we come up with all those CGI graphics when a good public service would be to explain how exit polls and counts are done.

Yeah, it's the classic 'we have nothing really to talk about so let's talk nonsense'.

It’s perhaps worth mentioning that they’re fairly new at this live election coverage business - 2015 was the first election they were allowed to broadcast before the Pacific polls closed, so prior to then the result has, more often than not, been known by the time they came on-air.

I don't think that's quite true. IIUC it was the first time they were allowed to broadcast in the Pacific. There was an old law embargoing coverage of results whilst polls were still open but it applied at a regional level (and became hopeless with the internet). So the 1993 results show on YouTube begins when polling closed in Atlantic Canada but the initial broadcast was only there with each region joining and being welcomed on air as its polls closed.

They are significant, but unfortunately the Canadian broadcasters usually don’t tell us what the significance of the numbers are. They tell us that the first 2 or 3 polling stations have XYZ votes, but they don’t tell us which polling stations they are and therefore don’t tell us what the percentage swings are compared with last time.

What time are we expecting results tonight? The polls close at 8:30pm in Newfoundland, which is midnight in the UK. Very soon after that.

Is there anywhere to watch the results from the UK? The last few election results programmes have been easy to find and watch in the UK. They have live streams on the main Tv broadcaster websites. As far as I can remember, they even show provincial results let alone national.

Yeah, I always watch CBC. They have results programmes for all provincial elections that are available to watch here as well (which, due to the volatile nature of Canadian politics, are almost always worth watching as well!).

Damn shame I won't be able to be up all night to watch it this time. I've got a 2hr Merchants, Pirates and Crusaders in the Medieval Mediterranean seminar at 2pm.

They do the only problem is many don’t show the swing or vote share change, maybe it’s to complicated for Canadians to understand haha
