Obviously there were factors specific to Tottenham which generated a large anti-Labour swing there that year Bit before my time but I take it you mean concerning Bernie Grant and the Broadwater Farm riots a couple of years before? Might need to moderate myself for bringing this off topic

The seat has a large electorate though, now significantly oversized hence the forthcoming boundary changes at the GE. That’s Hounslow for you Is it?

So quite amazingly the Tories would have been further ahead in this seat in 1987 than in the Brentford and Isleworth of that time, despite the loss of the Chiswick part of the seat. Looking at the results it’s clear how well the Tories did in London that year, even somewhere like Tottenham had a fairly small majority for Labour Yes, in 1986 Labour was riding high in London, what a difference a year made.

Takes you two hours to walk from one end to the other, don’t try it! And how many constituencies can you walk from one end to the other in less than two hours? Are you contributing rubbish to get your post count up?

There were also noticeable pro-Conservative swings in Brent East and Bristol South in 1987 where similar deselections occurred.

I was a candidate in Paisley North in 1997, pretty compact (northern half of Paisley plus Linwood and Renfrew) but would have taken more than 2 hours.

Are you contributing rubbish to get your post count up? In Greater London, Hayes and Harlington and Bromley and Chislehurst, Dagenham and Rainham feels like an age to go through, for more reasons than one if trying to get to Havering.

Interesting that the number of Tory constituencies with increased majorities in 1987 were similar to those with reduced majorities despite the Conservatives losing twenty seats, the North-South divide effectively cancelling each other out

Loved Bernie Grant. see my profile of Ealing North. Greenway wasn't originally seen as being on the right of the Tory Party but was basically a local rent-a-quote always ready with knockabout anti-Labour stuff. The other 3 were or still are definitely on the right of the party, Dicks particularly so.

He couldn't stand him, he thought Greenway as a fascist! He was an PE teacher but decided to train for social studies.

Well I'm not going to argue with you about Greenway's personal qualities as he publicly insulted my dad in 1980 in a letter to the Times (they printed Dad's reply too).....
