The first few posts in this thread make for a fun read now. Tice indeed did a bit better than Nuttall…
I must admit this came as a shock to me. The conditions in Great Yarmouth seemed very good for Reform and I always thought Clacton would be an easy win but I was not expecting the conservatives vote to collapse as much as they did here.

The now historical success of the Boston Bypass Independents was perhaps a pointer to the potential here.

This was only going to be one of the best Reform seats, like it was always one of the better UKIP areas in their heyday. Tice is exactly in line with what you'd expect considering that when, in 2015, UKIP got 34% here while polling 13% nationally, Reform got 38% here while polling 16% nationally.

In a general election most new candidates tend to be seen as "Generic party X" regardless of where they fit on the political spectrum.

A solid but not spectacular populistish right winger like Caroline Johnson would have probably been enough to hold on.

Unless they have a local profile I don't thing "generic right wing Tory" does much better than "generic centrist Tory".

Doubt anyone would give two shits who the Tory candidate is, never thought the Tories would hold this for a moment, Great Yarmouth yes, here no I always thought Reform would win the seats they won, except from Great Yarmouth. I thought the fifth Reform seat would be on Canvey Island or a Kent seat.
