In the County elections, UKIP seemed to poll best in poorer parts of the South East and East Anglia, places where Labour polled well in 2005, but where they failed to make a comeback in 2013.

You can look at that unsourced anecdote, or you can look at the full list of councillor defections which shows a tiny number of Labour defections to UKIP and a steady stream of Conservatives. Or you can look at the regular UKIP opinion polls which show how current UKIP voters say they voted in 2010, and enabled Peter Kellner to write this analysis.

It would be interesting to know how they voted in 2005 because I would guess quite a number are those who voted Conservative in 2010 but had voted Labour in the past

In the County elections, UKIP seemed to poll best in poorer parts of the South East and East Anglia, places where Labour polled well in 2005, but where they failed to make a comeback in 2013. I've just had a quick look again at the Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent CC results. In general (it seems to me) where UKIP won seats that had been Labour in 2005 but Tory in 2009, the winning margins were quite small and Labour generally came a strong second which might suggest that while a reasonably high percentage of 2005 Labour voters went UKIP, the Tory percentage was much more depressed. Aside from that group of seats there are all sorts of possibilities . In Faversham the Labour result was much better than in 2005, apparently thanks to the UKIP surge, in some of the places UKIP won from the Tories the Labour vote was negligible to start with, and the vast majority of the UKIP vote must have come from the Tories. I didn't look at Lincolnshire, but IIRC the party most affected by the UKIP surge was the Lib Dems, whose vote plunged catastrophically in some places. It will be interesting to see how this pans out in seats like Great Yarmouth, Waveney and Dover.

"His departure comes after he failed a re-selection interview in June to stand for the party in next year’s local elections."

Can't say that three years strikes me as 'long-standing'. If I were the journalist, I think I'd have stuck with 'senior'.
Becontree would appear to be a better prospect for UKIP than most wards in Barking and Dagenham, but that's not saying too much.

Yes I too was struck by the term 'long standing'.In fact, as the article suggests he has been a Councillor for less than one term. The fact remains that half the Labour Group are 'freshmen' Councillors in their first term (caused in part by the wipe-out of the BNP group, retirements and deselections) which means that a lot are not really long term party members. There have been three defections in this term (one to Tory, one Independent and this latest one). When I was a B&D Councillor in 1990-2004 no one ever defected, in fact since the foundation of the borough in 1965 no Labour Councillor ever defected.

What happened there again? And I note that turncoat Baldwin hasn't resigned his seat like he said he would

I'm amazed the Tories accepted Baldwin. He turned full somersault from hard left Labour to Tory in two months

I first came across him on Labour list where he was talking about New Labour being too right and all Tories are scum etc. etc. I feel even if you are desperate for a councillor a small search would have seen how unsuitable he was.

Baldwin was a regular contributor to the comment threads on Labour Unhinged, which says it all really! And his epistles were/are typically verbose and rambling to the point of being unreadable - and, even worse, regularly punctuated with "lols"

This rumour came to nought. I can confirm Victoria Ayling is still with us Also two councillors in Bracknell Forest have come across - Shel;agh Pile in Harmanswater and Michael Sargeant in Bulbrook. Also a Tory councillor in Stockton (Yarm ward) whose name I can't rememebr

I have no intention of joining the Conservatives As I have said plenty times, there are many agreements I have with the Conservatives, but there's so many on the LibDem side of the see-saw that the items on the Tory side fling up in the air and land in the neighbouring phone code area.
