WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND - Melcombe Regis (Conservative died)Stewart PEARSON (Labour Party Candidate) I wonder what he has planned at Thought Camp. The core question is whether he can engender the same sense of pandemographic communality we had in the 1997 election, but furrowed into the digital revolution.

Rawmarsh contest is caused by the resignation of the South Yorkshire PCC Shawn Wright. Lisa Wright is his wife. Her mother is Cllr Lindsay Johnston from Wingfield ward. Her grandmother is former Cllr Joan Johnston (joined the council in the 60s and served as Mayor in 1981-82). Her great-grandfather is Bill Skelton (who joined the local council in the 40s and served as mayor in 1969).

Labour definitely need to add Dorset South to their target seats list. We have never don that well in the Purbeck end of the seat but there has been a definite move to Labour in Weymouth and Portland. That won the seat for us in 2001.

Weymouth now stands at Tory 13 Labour 12 Lib Dem 8 Ind 3. Very finely balanced, but a decided swing to Labour since 2011. They also took 5 county council seats in the area two weeks ago.

People are fed up with the "establishment" and they run somebody who is, greatly exaggerating, related with half of the Rotherham council past and present. Not that this would change the impressive UKIP result. With a different candidate Labour may have held on by 100 instead of losing by 100 but it would have always been a bad result for them. The ward is in Wentworth and Dearne constituency.

Maybe things look differently on the ground, but that looks like such a completely and utterly idiotic choice of candidate that you almost have to wonder whether it was an attempt to lose the seat.
