So, I wonder who will stand for the Workers' Party? I am sure Mr Galloway will be rushing across with his bandwagon any minute now.

Will await confirmation but it's the Manor of Northstead's turn, and he'll succeed Chris Pincher. Just been appointed to said Manor.

The WP did not win , such as Batley and Spen. Blackpool South have very few Muslim voters. Wonder who will stand ?

Does anyone have a copy of Benton’s letter/statement? Some eager webmaster has turned his website into a redirect to conservatives.com.
I was going to congratulate Mr Benton on knowing how to ‘resign’ as an MP by writing to the Chancellor.

Wonder how much money the abortive recall petition process has cost Blackpool's hard-pressed council. Benton departing with all the grace that characterised his tenure. Edit: I'm told the money is recoverable from central government, so Blackpool council is OK but it's still a waste of public money. What a farce, couldn’t he have made his mind up earlier!

Who will stand in this by-election? With local elections occurring the same day there will not be that much attention devoted specifically to this by-election.

Incidentally the resignation also allows the Conservatives to start a selection process. Benton was suspended from the whip when the sting operation was revealed, pending the inevitable inquiries, but had not been expelled from the Conservative Party so left the local party in limbo.

I've got to say.... what an absolute fucking shambles the Conservative Party are.
I vaguely know this bloke from his time as a Councillor.
But how can CCHQ get it so consistently wrong?

They’re very different contests though. Hartlepool at the hight of Boris’ power, and there was an excitement about a Conservative gain, this time there’s a near universal agrement that Labour will comfortably regain this seat. This won’t be the first brick to come out of whatever Boris built in 2019, it’s yet one more after the roof fell off and the foundations cracked. There’s also around a week less for small parties and attention seeking independents to organise themselves. I’ll wager 9-10 candidates.

On the previous same-date as the London Mayoral election (2016) there were two parliamentary by-elections which had only 7 and 5 candidates (Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough, and Ogmore).

They appear to have taken John Loony's unusually sensible advice.
