So...after dafties wanting to defund the police, we now have dafties wanting to defund the Department of Justice. If you haven't worked out the connection, the Department of Justice is in charge of federal prosecutions. One of the people currently under federal prosecution is a Mr Donald John Trump of Florida. And he's not pleased about it.

Jordan supporters are spinning that his poor result is down to Scalise. Apparently Jordan asked Scalise to nominate him but the later refused.

I think under the circumstances that was asking a bit much of Scalise Indeed, but the obvious implication is that Scalise has privately supported the rebellion. If that is the case there is simply no way Jordan can win.

If that is the case there is simply no way Jordan can win. There's no way that Jordan can win anyway. There are still enough of the Republican conference who can spot a crazy, and don't want one being Speaker. The fact that there's 200 of them who either can't or are so enmeshed in the Culture War that they don't care as long as it's not THE ENEMY.

In fairness there are likely some who have just had enough of the fighting and think they’re as well letting that wing of the party actually try some responsibility rather than continually causing chaos from the background

I certainly think a Jordan win is extremely unlikely but he did seem to be winning over a lot of the holdouts over the weekend and yesterday and there was a feeling that he was quite close. Some of the anti-Jordan camp that emerged today were quite surprising.

It was interesting some of the analysis regarding the utter lack of caucus engagement he and his supporters have. Jordan's a rank amateur, and it shows.

It all goes back to 1989 when Newt Gingrich was elected House Minority Whip over Ed Madigan by 87 votes to 85: www.nytimes.com/1989/03/23/us/house-republicans-elect-gingrich-of-georgia-as-whip.html. I remember interviewing Peter Smith (then Republican Congressman for Vermont - he didn't vote for Gingrich) about the GOP's rightward lurch from the Reagan era onwards. This mire is the apotheosis of all of that. If McCarthy took 15 rounds of voting to win the Speakership, what hope does Jordna have? He has footsoldiers with Sean Hannity and Donald Trump supporting him. Jordan is more conservative than 91% of the current House, so he certainly has his backers among the GOP base. Many Republicans who opposed him will probably lose their seats in, for example, New York and Oregon in 2024. Speaker Jordan would be manna from heaven for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, not least because Jordan isn't the fundraising titan McCarthy is. Voting resumes at 11 am EST (3 pm our time).

I would imagine the DCCC is salivating over the ability to go out campaigning against all the GOP incumbents who were not previously tied to the extreme but have now voted for Jordan as Speaker on party unity grounds.

The House is about to convene for round 2. Jordan's allies are spinning that he will get fewer today although that might just be expectations management.

GOP at full strength today. 1 Democrat did not answer the quorum call.
Tom Cole is nominating Jim Jordan in a much more level handed manner that Stefanik did yesterday.
