Of the 55 electoral wards in Somerset, I think the Lib Dem’s would win about 48 of them in a by election that occurred at the moment. I think the only ones they wouldn’t win are the 4 in Bridgwater, Dulverton & Exmoor, and the 2 Green wards in Frome.

Slovenia has suffered some horrendous natural disasters this past week, but to my knowledge it has not slipped down into the Balkan peninsula. Anyway, I was in the division halfway between the parliamentary by-election and this one time-wise, in Ansford parish where two aunts and one uncle of mine now live. Not sure what the politics of the old couple in the big house up the hill (and beyond the orchard) are, but my spinster aunt had a LD leaflet still in her bungalow's letterbox when I was there and just out of sight of that, a big red Labour rosette pinned to the fridge. So, with no Labour candidate in sight, I presume she might have abstained or else cast a blank or spoiled vote today. My mother had been staying with her this morning and said to me on the phone in the evening that she wasn't aware of any plans to go out and vote having been discussed over breakfast. Decent win for the Lib Dems there, mind, and fair enough since they were the only party with any evidence of campaigning activity when I visited.

Although, it could well be a fair percentage of those who voted for him didn't know anything about him or being disowned & say the description/ logo & voted for the party

When was he disowned? If postals had already gone out, that would also minimise the impact.

When was he disowned? If postals had already gone out, that would also minimise the impact. David reported, no doubt very promptly, the fact he was disowned on 9 August. I am sure the majority of postal votes would have been returned by then, and there was little time for opposition parties to use this fact against the candidate in leaflets or on the doorstep.

I would also assume that in a very safe ward like this there's much less incentive to spend time making sure the electorate are aware. If you're going to win anyway, why bother trying to pad the margin by 5% extra?

The actual suspension of Ed Green occurred a good fortnight before polling day - it was reported in the Romford Recorder on 26 July.

I found out when I wrote the Preview over the weekend, and that was from a local press report. So it must have been known earlier than that.
