Do we know about the East Sussex Count? Its a pretty rural division so I wouldn't be surprised if it's tomorrow?

There is quite a sharp swing from Labour to Conservative (or rather more Liberal Democrat) in Dunstone but we will definitely take a pretty clear victory in a traditionally very safe Tory ward. I mean look at the result from 2018 for example, that was hardly a terrible Labour year.

I mean look at the result from 2018 for example, that was hardly a terrible Labour year. That ward was Lab/ Con split in 1995, so recent Labour results there have been good in that context. The Labour result there in May was astonishing and probably their best in the city. I thought Labour would win by more last night though. Perhaps a case that the first candidate to breakthrough in a ward is often the best candidate that a party has and subsequent candidates aren’t quite as good, but probably more that the get the tree destroying Tories out was an all consuming card in May and is less in play now. Will be a competitive ward next year you’d think.

As we saw in Swindon last week, there can often be swings back in byelections soon after "wave" elections.
(there was another instance in Harlow in mid-2021 IIRC - still a Tory win, but a sizeable movement back to Labour)

I would assume that the LDs also did a bit of campaigning this time and were able to count on resources from outside the city, whereas their results in May suggest that they didn't even have a target ward in the city.

Was this tactical unwind after the get the Tories out in May or a sign of the Lib Dems putting in a bit more effort or a bit of both?

Another curiosity of the Swindon and Plymouth (Dunstone) byelections is that both the Labour candidates were active LibDems fairly recently.

East Sussex, Heathfield & Mayfield Green 1373 Con 858 Green gain from Conservative Pretty decisive, even the would-be LibDem candidate actually standing might not have prevented this.
