If that's the Eager Poet I think it is, you're braver than I ever was in there!

Is this definitely confirmed? I'm struggling to find a Notice of Election but that just be me struggling with Somerset Council's website. It was issued yesterday and is on the South Somerset version of Somerset's electoral services page but for some reason is listed under "General Election – Somerton and Frome constituency". The deadline for nominations is Friday 4pm, the same as for the other two 20 July by-elections.

That is an unreasonably short amount of time for by-election candidates to get their nomination forms ready and submitted, it has to be said. Most election notices give 6 or 7 days, not 3.

I wonder if in, say, East Devon where a credible independent would have a chance at a by election it would have been allowed to be so short, although in that case she's gone quiet. Or in Northern Ireland because...well, Northern Ireland. Maybe I'm just a cynic.

What is this cryptic exchange about? It's a pub in Milton Keynes, which doesn't appear to be anything special.

It's a pub in Milton Keynes, which doesn't appear to be anything special. The pub has something of a reputation locally. For a long time it was the occasional haunt of a large group of travellers/Roma: personally I never had any problems but there were bouts of violence. The toilets were pretty grim (even after the refurb) and the customer base is...an acquired taste. A lot of people gave it a wide berth, justifiably. Not somewhere I'd take a girlfriend (although I dated a regular). It attracts the wrong sort of football crowd and frankly is a bit scary. Not half as bad as the Blacksmiths at Downs Barn which is a genuine flat roof sort of place, minus the flat roof, and is like something out of The Hills Have Eyes. I went in once. Never did it again, and it really takes something for me not to frequent a pub within walking distance.

Does it have an open mic comedy night?
BTW, only one in seven dwarfs are happy.

can't find even a single supporter to pose in a photo with you?
why not just talk in the direction of a bush and pretend someone is sat behind it...

Not just the website that's hopeless. Phoning is no better. Just been on the phone to someone claiming to be in their elections office, who says they don't have an electronic copy of the register to give candidates ("we never have") - but i can visit any time between 9 and 4 to inspect a paper copy - and the address he gave me to drop of the nomination papers is different from that published on the Notice of Election.

An excruciatingly poor interview with the LD candidate now on Twitter!

I assume that’s the Guardian’s podcast? If so completely agree don’t understand how someone could be so unprepared.

They already knew there was a potential by-election when she was selected.

She's actually done a fair bit of media before this and been absolutely fine, suspect it's more a case of it going from being something that might happen to being very real very quickly and the stress/exhaustion that comes along with it.

It sounds as if she thought it was going to be recorded and edited before broadcast. It reminds me of the Lib Dem candidate in the Croydon North by-election in 2012. At hustings, and in the radio interview, she was very wooden and stilted, and half the time it was obvious (from how she was speaking) that she was reading an answer from a pre-prepared script. She didn’t even try to disguise it by punctuating it with a few “er” or “um”.

An excruciatingly poor interview with the LD candidate now on Twitter! Thick as a really thick butcher's mince. Comically stupid. Actually, a bit worrying that this sort of person is selected for a seat they could actually win..
