Waverley BC, Farnham Castle ward. Cllr Heather McLean (Farnham Residents) has resigned. There's an echo in here.

St. Ishmael, Pembrokeshire will be on 16 April. Do you mean 18th April, or is it actually on a Tuesday?

Oxford, St Clements (2024). Tom Hayes (Labour) has been removed from the list of councillors. He's Labour candidate for Bournemouth East so presumably moving there.

Worth repeating again and again that this is what happens when Labour's centralist organization does not allow wards to select their own candidates. No-one knew anything about these people imposed on them by the regional office.

Worth repeating again and again that this is what happens when Labour's centralist organization does not allow wards to select their own candidates. No-one knew anything about these people imposed on them by the regional office. I wasn't aware that these 2 were imposed on the local party but it wouldn't particularly surprise me. I was told by a member last May that Chandni had appeared essentially out of nowhere and had almost certainly lied during candidate selection though so it wouldn't surprise me. It would also suggest that if random party members were suspicious of what was happening then either the local party knew or were incredibly negligent...

That's an election offence. Are they being prosecuted?

That's an election offence. Are they being prosecuted? I believe they have been reported by the local party to the police for prosecution but I have no idea whether anything has or will come of it.

Regional office can make reasonably good decisions when they impose candidates, but there are two necessary preconditions for it:
1. Experienced people in the regional office who know the region well and are familiar with most local activists; 2. Low enough churn of activists that you can reasonably keep track of them.
Anecdotally, there's been a lot of turnover in regional offices in recent years and Brighton is the sort of place with a high level of churn.

I find it hard to get as exercised by this as some tbh - two chancers got found out in a relatively short time, that arguably shows the system isn't working too badly.

Still doesn't justify replacing local democracy by unelected office boys.
