No by-election.

I missed this when it was posted here and have only just seen it. Fortunately I had already heard, as a mutual friend had let me know.

I had known him well for about 40 years. He first became a Labour councillor on Stroud council in the 1990s soon after moving to the area, and then defected to the Greens some years later. I didn't see him much after he had moved to the Stroud area, but always enjoyed his friendship, and am quite shocked at his relatively early demise.

Councillor Dean Ruddle ( LD, Somerton) Somerset council, sadly died suddenly yesterday aged 59.

He was the executive member for Adult Social Care. Originally elected as a Conservative.

To clarify, he wasn't elected as a Conservative to this term. He was elected as a Conservative in South Somerset in 2015, an independent in 2019, and a Lib Dem on the new Somerset Council in 2022.

Clearly a personally popular figure in Somerton, as he fairly easily topped the poll each time regardless of label.

Brigid McBride (Lab), Loughton and Shenley ward in Milton Keynes has resigned.
She was only elected in May. "For health reasons." Lab have announced their candidate will be Leo Montague, who stood down as a Lib Dem Councillor for Monkston ward in May.

I don't think I've met her so don't have much insight, other than the Tories need this ward if they have any hopes of winning the Milton Keynes Central seat at the GE. May be a separate by-election but the ward is up in May for the next seat so could be left for a double-header then. Unless there's more to this than meets the eye, odd timing to resign now rather than in March, if they are looking at a May election though.

By-election in Lewisham now appears likely as Labour select Damien Egan (current mayor) for the Kingswood by-election.

I'm told Damien Egan has formally resigned today, so the byelection for Mayor of Lewisham is expected in February. (Should the new Mayor be a current councillor there will be a knock-on third byelection)
