In Wall End, Labour are canvassing tonight with their leaflet showing all their "accomplishments" for the Ward which is pretty thin gruel to be honest.

Apparently the Conservatives are "trying to steal my vote" which seems odd in a Ward which voted 65% Labour in 2022 - it wouldn't so much be theft as up there with "you're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off".

She was just re-elected last month so this is a vacancy for a term ending in 2027. She was a Labour cllr.

Always Conservative going back to the creation of the council, even in 1995, except this year. It's basically a rural area south-west of (and east of, but basically nobody lives there) Glossop; the main settlement is the village of Charlesworth. As far as I can see, nothing about it suggests the sort of area you'd expect Labour to win.

I think the second East Sussex vacancy mentioned above means that the Conservative majority is at stake with the two vacancies (they currently have 25/50 seats with two vacancies), although in practice their control is not.

The incumbent Sir Ian Luder is, I think, 72 this year so probably retiring. This election is also at the regular six years since the last election. He was unopposed in 2017 & 2011.

Controversially Ian Luder was not awarded a knighthood when he completed his term as Lord Mayor of London (2008-2009) but was only awarded a CBE in the 2010 New Year honours.

He was subsequently a UKIP PPC in 2015:
"polling 12,097 votes (26.5% of the total), 7,692 votes behind the incumbent Conservative candidate, Stephen Metcalfe."

His wikipedia profile declares he was a Labour cllr in Bedford for 23 years as well as being the Labour PPC for Yeovil in 1979, which was also Paddy Ashdown's first election as a PPC in the same constituency.

Wasn't there a spike in vote registrations from Arthur Andersen when he first rann? Nothing illegal but it was somehow seen as ungentlemanly.
