The LDs' voter base can now best be described as "Tories who don't really like the Tory Party". yes, but only about half of them.

They had just 8 seats and were led by Christian firebrand Tim Farron. Tim Farron is not a firebrand in any regard. And believing that sex outwith marraige is sinful is mainstream Christianity but most Christians are too spineless to say so. Being willing to endure even mild derision let alone persecution for their faith is staggeringly rare. Bearing witness is equally rare and largely limited to those who get a salary for it.

Can't say that's anywhere close to my experience of Christians. And the number of Christians I know well enough to judge their willingness to endure mild derision or to bear witness to their faith is at least an order of magnitude larger than those you know well enough to judge in that respect.
