St Erth was of course mentioned in the Flanders and Swan song "The Slow Train". But wrongly. It has not "passed out of our lives" and remains open and indeed on the Cornish main line with hourly trains to and from Paddington. Not quite hourly trains to Paddington. Junction for the St Ives branch which is a shut in operation by staff. The box will escape the forthcoming cull of signalboxes in Cornwall- three are closing and control is moving to Exeter. Those being Truro (change here for Falmouth), Par (change here for Newquay) and Lostwithiel (change here for a walk to Fowey).

Marazion has one of the best pasty shops in Penwith- Philps. They have a few other locations in the area too IIRC. Used to frequent the area regularly when I was studying in Falmouth as Marazion Bay and area is fantastic for birding. Was always worth trekking from the RSPB reserve into the village for sustenance. Have Philps opened in Marazion then? When I lived in Cornwall they had just the one shop in Hayle. Other pasty shops include Hampsons in Hayle and Anne's on the Lizard. As mentioned elsewhere. There isn't lot to Helston. Barring a dance or two.

the Blue Anchor pub in Helston is a must, a centuries-old pub with its own ancient brewery.

And after a pint or four of Middle one can get quality conversation with erudite alcoholics, until about 12.30 and then it gets quieter and a little more morose. It is a step back in time to pre-Progressive let alone pre-Woke! But, sadly I have not been for a couple of decades.

In the Cornwall UA election Labour's Natassia Player is the chairman of St Erth parish council.
St Erth was of course mentioned in the Flanders and Swan song "The Slow Train".
Nastassia... You don't meet many of those.

Nastassia... You don't meet many of those. then you're hanging out in the wrong countries. Only if you count Cornwall as a country (which many would, of course).

Nastassia... You don't meet many of those. then you're hanging out in the wrong countries. Well yes, Nasstasja Kinski was the one who jumped out. Or Nastassia Noens who is a French skiier. But not sure I've ever met one in Britain.

Plenty of Nastassias wherever there are sizable numbers of Russians (or Ukrainians, Russia Germans etcpp)! Though some will have internationalized their name (Anastasia (sp)).

Yes, there were quite a few stations named in that song that remain open, Ambergate being another. One suspects that the names were chosen for their lyrical qualities rather than on the basis of accuracy. Everything in the song was proposed for closure, just in some cases the places in question were never actually closed. Ambergate station was one of these (see page 109 of the report); Chester-le-Street was another. While St Erth was never proposed for closure, the St Ives branch was (page 106), meaning one would no longer be able to go by train from St Erth to St Ives.

Nice to see Kirby Muxloe at the start; a whole bunch of my maternal ancestors came from there.

I used Dunstable Town once, and only once, in the snow and otherwise looking much like the picture here and that was the night before my wedding day. Some people do stags.... ... and I suppose not many of you are old enough to have seen Flanders and Swann ( or even as that film would have it, Fanders and Swann) perform that song live in their London theatre run - was it the Fortune?
