I think North Northamptonshire (Northall) must end all discussion about where 'the North' starts. It starts HERE. I am not sure of the geographical implications of South Lanarkshire (East Kilbride Central North). Depends on what they identify as.

Is there a betting market for the Hotwells & Harbourside by-election? Probably the most interesting by-election of 2023 as a genuine LD/Green marginal. LDs with strong name recognition candidate and the infamous by-election machine, and Greens with momentum behind them and ability to bus in activists from everywhere.

There's a large and fairly close third place Labour vote in that ward. I wonder what sort of campaign they are running?

It seems that one outcome of the by election is a decision by the Mayor not to move the central library, which was being mooted but is no longer being mooted ‘ following feedback on the doorsteps’ Caroline Lucas is apparently going to visit this week i would describe it as a potential 3 way marginal rather than 2.

Hotwells and Harbourside is a cut down version of Cabot ward, which used to be a Lib Dem stronghold but where Labour were strong in 1995 and after 2010. There must be a chance of a 'slip through the middle' Labour win.

The Bristol ward will certainly be both interesting and consequential. The choice of the Lib Dem candidate raises the stakes. Candidate and campaign quality plus perception of the council and Mayor will decide it rather than national party standing. That's always true to an extent but this looks emphatically that way.

Note that Stephen Williams was first the Avon county councillor, then the Bristol City Councillor, for this ward from 1993 until he became MP. Some of his constituents may remember him from that, as well as his Parliamentary service.

There must be a chance of a 'slip through the middle' Labour win. And it does remain the case that the previous contest is from 2021, when Labour's results were generally poor both locally and nationally.

I suspect though that there has been a lot of population churn in that time Yes, I would suspect that there’s a much higher than average population churn in that ward. It’s full of 20 and 30 something renters. ( paying £1200 per month to rent a 1 bed flat).

He is 32 and single and lives in, what I would describe as, a very small flat. I haven’t asked him if he’s going to vote on Thursday! But if he does, he will vote Green. Here in Taunton, a 3 bed House is about £1200 per month.

There's a strong case to say that Bristol has a worse problem with housing market failure than London, at least in the private rental sector: you have what are essentially London rents, but you certainly do not have London wages.

This is certainly true in the city centre - I'm not sure what you'd pay for an equivalent house in Hartcliffe or Avonmouth. I suspect much less than in Temple Meads or Clifton but much more than equivalent areas of most other cities

£1000 for a 2 bed flat in Avonmouth described as "Homely" - the photos reveal a dump.
