Is this the closest ever a by-election has been to Christmas?
Whomever wins, it's definitely a Merry Christmas.

Back in the 1980s there were at least a couple of byelections *between* Xmas and New Year. Might not have happened since then, though.

I would never, ever recommend it but we had a surprising number of festive volunteers out and lots of residents enjoyed our street stalls. Didn’t vote for us, but we had a good laugh with them. It was good fun right up to the count…

As with every year, with the First Mass of Christmas (other services are available: "that would be an ecumenical matter"). I was simply pointing out that the Thursday of Christmas week would be next week, not this.

I've just noticed that Redcar & Cleveland had all-out elections in May 2019, and will again in May 2023 - so why is there a by-election at all? Why isn't it caught by the 6-month rule?

The 6-month rule applies to the date of the vacancy, not the date of the by-election, so some contests do occur after the cut-off.

Those wards look awfully small to have three members (streetwise). The average number of electors per councillor is only about 1,800 in Redcar and Cleveland, which does seem very low - for comparison the figure in Portsmouth is roughly double that so three member wards would be twice as big.

Those wards look awfully small to have three members (streetwise). In 2019 the turnout and electorate of Teesville was 1,674 out of 5,010. The electorate of Normanby was 5,419, and the turnout is given as "30.85%" (which is approximately accurate) or "3,623" (which is inaccurate (it is the total number of votes (in a 2-member ward) plus the number of spoilt ballot papers)).
