The vacancy on the IoW on the 24th looks at least doable for them, though the Greens might also fancy that one. Yes I missed that one. They should fancy that one I've seen on social media that the Greens are working that one quite a bit.

KINGSTON UPON THAMES, Green Lane and St James - Kingston Ind Res Group gain from LD KIRG 855 LD 647 Lab 265 C 78 I have a feeling that we've not heard the end of this one. In terms of the result being contested for some reason? I understand from posts upthread and Andrew’s Preview that there was a somewhat questionable leaflet put out by the KIRG concerning the LD candidate’s muslim faith that earned a joint condemnation from all the other parties, and may be legally problematic.

pretty unscrupulous is being pretty kind. An openly Islamophobic campaign waged by a local party whose leader was George Galloway's election agent. I hope that the gloves will come off now as despite my dislike of Lib Dems & Tories I'd far rather have them on the local council than the KIRG. Labour, better still, but we still have an uphill battle to regain our place on that council. Sure - don't take away my red font for this, but I would probably have voted tactically Lib Dem in this ward to try to defeat KIRG.

Without betraying too many secrets, there's been some discussion in the yellow room on how our performance in recent weeks has been relatively poor, and in particular - like last night - concerns over the number of by-elections where we haven't put up a candidate. Some might be in the context of local deals and arrangements, particularly if it's where an anti-Tory coalition is running the council - but surely not all come into that catetgory

Not surprised by Cannock West given local trend and its history. First time that Labour has polled more than 30% in a non-two-way contest in twenty years there.

I'm hearing that the police are investigating this as a hate crime. Not a big fan of the concept myself, but ...

When it comes to politics "the police are investigating" could mean anything from an active task force is gathering information to somebody sent them an email and had a reply acknowledging it.
The KIRG are unrepentant:

Depletion of local activist capacity, the 'stop Brexit' surge being far more focused on Westminster politics? Its more recent than that though, the last few months really. Before then they were making a decent number of gains. It's surely a combination - yes they've lost a lot of members (but I suspect these are biased towards their weaker areas - for example they will have had lots of people joining in Westminster and Fulham and other very remainy places they foolishly targeted in 2019). Where they remain strong and have realistic prospects their membership won't be declining (as much). A few months back they were polling 10-12% pretty consistently with Labour in the high thirties - now they've slipped back a bit and Labour are ten+ points better off. So from being roughly a third of Labour's vote they are more like a fifth and that makes it more difficult for their advanced bar chart technology to work and more likely people vote for the default anti Tory option regardless of local circumstance. They've also had at least two defences in councils with massive Lib Dem majorities (South Cambs and Kingston) where the appeal to get the Tories out won't work and they have a council record to defend. But fundamentally they're still fucked because of the 2010 coalition and Clegg (and Davey's) hollowing out. There's still enough people who don't believe the Lib Dems can beat the Tories because the last time they claimed to do that they put them into power. They need time and a new generation of leaders for that to disappear.
