I recall driving into the City along Trumpington Road in the sixties. There was always a good smattering of posters at election time, mainly Tory, but always a few Labour, one of which was where I was told Sir Geoffrey de Freitas, then MP for Kettering, lived. Labour was second fiddle to the Tories, only winning in 1945 and 1966. Now a Tory MP is unthinkable, reflecting the dramatic decline of Tory allegiance among educated and public sector electors. The countervailing rise in Conservatism among the "blue wall" voters is much less reliable, in my view. The cost of living crisis should be fatal for Liz Truss. I hope Labour (& Lib Dems) cannot contrive to mess it up.
