If I recall correctly, Jill Archer was elected to South Borsetshire District Council in 1973, during the reorganisation elections, and proceeded to have a run in with one of the aldermen on the council. Aldermen had been abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, but were still serving in Greater London and The Isles of Scilly. It was unclear whether South Borsetshire came under Greater London or The Isles of Scilly. Did the Alderman role not continue until the reorganised authorities came into effect in May 1974? The 'shadow councils' were elected in 1973 but only took power in 1974, with the previous authorities remaining in control up to then.

Spelthorne. Laleham and Shepperton Green Con 810 LD 578 TUSC 71 Seems a decent result for the Conservatives there. Which is another way of saying it's a pretty disappointing result for the Lib Dems- not just because of the missed opportunity in itself, but of what it says about this particular bit of progressive alliance thinking- Lib Dems dropped the ball when it was their turn , so to speak. Of course local factors may trump anything else, plus August is a funny month, but maybe the wall-to-wall coverage the Tories have had lately works in their favour in places that normally would be overwhelmingly Tory anyway.

Amazingly in the Blair years Labour won a by-election in the larger County Council division including the ward.

As a child I lived on our farm (Farmoor) between Oxford and Eynsham in what was then Berkshire, but is sadly now Oxfordshire. We understood that the Archers were based on villages in southern Warwickshire. However, at least one of the writers knew our area well and issues that arose in our village e.g. heavy lorries using side roads from a gravel quarry were included as story lines in the programme.

Well, that is a bit more like the typical Tory result in recent months.
Maybe their much easier than expected hold in Spelthorne was partly something of a reaction against the "Progressive Alliance" idea?

The storyline coincided with/flowed on immediately after a row in our village.

Maybe their much easier than expected hold in Spelthorne was partly something of a reaction against the "Progressive Alliance" idea? The two results might yield lessons for the progressive alliance. If you take it too far in obviously taking it in turns then there is a risk that voters spot it and don’t like it, but is there a sweet spot in standing a single anti Tory candidate each time without making it too obvious, or is it better to stand paper candidates The Green would almost certainly have won a straight Con/ Green contest in Dodderhill. The LDs might have won a straight LD/ Con contest there.

I really think it not necessary for you to apologise for being a child in the late 50's! I was at university in the late 50's! I'm sure you are right to suggest a newsworthy row from your - then Berkshire- village at the time of the Archers story may well be its source, but I am pretty sure such rows were not that uncommon at the time, which was after all a time for a surge in house building, among other things.

Re Spelthorne, looks like the electors are not playing ball. The Greens & Labour won their by-elections, but the LDs have now lost 2 in a row.
