As I think I mentioned on the old site, I played in the same cricket team as David Miliband for a number of years, and he is a thoroughly decent, honest person. I make no reference to whether people on here (or indeed myself) like his politics or not, to my mind this is a loss to British politics, but I hope a gain in a wider sphere.

I think he is a nice guy, like his brother is but he had the chances and just lacked that final bit to win.

As I said above, I'm not much of a fan of PMs with the "will to win" and "killer instinct". I prefer PMs with judgement.

I see it as mixed for Ed M. It stops the press actively using David to do down Ed. But it also loses a useful weapon from Ed's armoury. So probably broadly neutral.

I have no inside information but it is possible that the Lib Dems will not contest the byelection . They may leave it to the old Liberal Party as they do most of the wards in this parliamentary seat at local elections . There is also the Progressives who have won one ward in the very recent past and a number of Independents who have also been elected in recent years in some of the wards . I would see that as a very bad idea and doubt it, This is a national decision not that of a rather limited local party.

So is Hugh Grant standing as the Labour candidate? Sounds like a perfect representative of South Shields.

Rumour has it, that we've got either Ant or Dec standing for us. CCHQ are currently figuring out, which one is which.

Don't the Electoral Reform Society realise that even if we had D'Hondt as our voting system for general elections, there would still be safe seats (ie. for whoever tops the list for Labour in the North East and the Tories in the South East)? Of course the ERS realises that, which is why the ERS is against list systems (D'Hondt or otherwise) just as much as it is against FPTP.

The irony of things was that Brown was very likely saved by the arrival of the worldwide financial crisis in September of that year ... he used that moment to show that he could (after all) lead. Does ERS realise you get safe seats under STV and voters who will just vote in line with the HTV or equivalent to put the party's most preferred candidate on top? QV Belfast West.

Does ERS realise you get safe seats under STV Safe seats only exist in STV if there are not enough candidates to choose from in a particular party - a situation which can easily be remedied by the addition of independent or unofficial candidates without the danger of splitting the vote. If the voters are happy to follow the instructions of their party in vote-management (which Sinn Fein is good at) then that indicates they are content with the choices they are making and the candidates they are choosing from.

Theres nothing wrong with safe seats. It just reflects how people actually vote in a local area. Should the Valleys contain safe labour seats? Obviously given thats what the people clearly want.
We need PR that has NO preferential component.

Preference voting would mean seats were safe in the Valleys for "the left" but not for any party or candidate.

Breathing easier now?? I suppose our former PM will have to place your disdain alongside the widespread praise he recieved throughout the world for his actions then and subsequently...... I think he can live with that

I have seen some crap about David Milliband today in the Telegraph - apparently ruins labour's 2015 plans and in the Guardian as well (apparently offerred shadow chancellor's job twice and turned it down ...
