Wednesday 20th July: BASILDON DC; Nethermayne (Ind died) Candidates: COTTRELL, Mark Richard (Conservative) KINNANE, Michael Brian (Reform UK) LARKIN, Mo (Independent) NICE, Stephen William (Liberal Democrats) WRIGHT, Dylan Montgomery (Labour) How did i fail to notice previously that the Lib Dem candidate here is Mr Nice? There is of course a much more well known Mr Nice who became a significant figure in the Lib Dems before he stepped aside from party politics as Sir Geoffrey. He had been the SDP candidate for Dover and continued as an important Lib Dem in East Kent early years of the party before moving on to his better known role as warcrimes prosecutor where he was anything but Mr Nice. In those earlier political days he and I were often working in tandem- he as Geoffrey Nice and me as Geoffrey Nasty, of course.

There is radio silence on Twitter so I'm suspecting the Nethermayne count is actually today. Essex police, of all people, posted this Yesterday PCSO BRADY and PCSO NICE from Basildon and Laindon Community Policing Team had the pleasure of witnessing the ballot counting for the By-Election for Borough Councillor in the Nethermayne Ward which their team covers. They were ready to congratulate the winner. Congratulations to Councillor Mo Larkin BEM JP DL. Brady and Nice, I’m sure I saw that show one lunchtime on itv

And maybe the best known Mr Nice contested four parliamentary seats at once in 1997: Norwich South, Norwich North, Neath and Southampton Test .... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Marks#Advocacy_and_politics

Con hold in Penkridge by 10 from LD 388 Con 378 LD 45 Lab Buggerbuggerbugger. Actually a decent result in a ward we haven't even stood in for ages, but still deeply frustrating. Bar charts draw themselves next time, I suppose.

Bit of a nearly week. Two good results that were frustratingly close to great results. At least it gives platforms to build off.
