Yes, on 11 November 2021, which was a narrow Labour win on a 13% turnout.

Assuming the by-election is called, it will be the 11th in Lancaster since the 2019 elections (and the 10th since last May), representing 18.33% of all the councillors elected then... that must be getting on for some sort of record.

Looking back at the results, I can’t see that Angela Newton was elected in 1979 but I think the results might be wrong. She was elected for Labour in 1973 & 1976, Alliance  in 1983 and 1987 and then Independent since 1991.

I think it's worse than that! 12th and 11th if I have counted correctly - one in Dec 2019, eight completed between May 2021 and now, another next week and now two pending.

And I think proportionally Rutland have done worse than Lancaster's 20% - six byelections out of 27 is 22.2%!

Although two of the by-elections in Rutland were for the same seat, so it isn't quite 6 out of 27...

Hartlepool, Throston. There is a vacancy, for which the byelection will be on 13 Oct, but I'm not sure which councillor has caused the vacancy. There are two Ind and one Lab councillor for the ward, all three are still listed on the website and the notice of vacancy doesn't say.

Broxtowe (Greasley) and Nottinghamshire (Eastwood), both caused by the death of Eddie Cubley (Con).

With regard to the 5 vacancies in Ryedale, any 2 registered voters anywhere in Ryedale can call all 5 of them.

It has just been announced that Labour Cllr Malcolm Cunning (Glasgow, Linn ward) has died. This ward was closely divided in May, with Glasgow's two major parties, the SNP and Labour, winning two cllrs a piece so the forthcoming by-election is likely to be a closely fought race.
