Reading the Mark Pack account of this result, he mentions two other factors nobody I think has mentioned here about the Lib Dem candidate- he was the only candidate of the five who lived in the ward, and he owned the local pub. Putting that on top of the the two things we had noted, the fact that he was the former councillor for the predecessor ward and that he had a lot of help (training, etc) from the party campaigns, how could anybody ever have doubted he would win? These are local elections and candidate choice is important (though owning the local pub must, at best, be two-edged!).

Anyway, 100% of 2022 elections so far have ended in Lib Dem gains. The bar charts write themselves...

Don't they always? The largest department of LD HQ being the Creative Writing Centre. I hear that Conservative HQ has a huge painting and decorating section. But the security there is very lax and it's cash only. They prefer to wallpaper over most things to get an immediate quick effect. Socialists are old-fashioned and still cling to good old Whitewash!

Living in the ward - or at least the local area - always gains votes in local elections - especially if you make a campaigning point of it.

iirc when I was in Caerphilly in 83 the sole Liberal member of the Rhymney Vally council was publican called Angus
