It would be good if former PMs staying on in the House for a while became more of the norm again. Obviously May did so, Boris was essentially forced out by the standard process and Truss got beaten

Ted Heath was really an exception. Still in the House decades later. Callaghan stayed for a while too.

Major saw out his term although I’ve no idea how much he contributed in the House, Brown also did but was hardly ever about

John Prescott didn't kick the man when he was down. He never had the chance, as his punch didn't manage to knock the guy to the ground. I think it was Rodney Bickerstaffe who said he considered it a poor show from Prescott, given the latter's reputation as a boxing champ.

I think it was Rodney Bickerstaffe who said he considered it a poor show from Prescott, given the latter's reputation as a boxing champ. As I recall they asked a champion boxer for a comment on Prescott's punch and he queried why he hadn't followed up his right jab with a left hook...

Because he is not a southpaw and the right jab was alien to him, he did well to even throw it.

Good gag from an essentially lightweight politician and all that but far more concerning is the nub of the matter, the current UK government is incapable of bringing itself to even utter meaningless words of support for women who believe that women's sport should be reserved for women as the term is almost universally understood. Some of their backbench representatives are clearly uncomfortable with this and may need to consider what is more core to their identity, being a woman or being Labour.

The alleged victim of the alleged assault has already been interviewed and photographed by the Daily Mail, and he says that he has spoken to the police. It doesn’t seem to be clear whether he wants to take the matter further or not; meanwhile there has still not been any report saying that the police have “arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of assault”, so maybe he doesn’t want to. He's been voluntarily interviewed and the victim has spoken to the police There are a number of hurdles for this to go via the judicial route, which still includes pressing charges - and the Mail story didn't indicate to me either way wherever they would be pressed.

'Pressing charges' is an Americanism. In accordance with the way such decisions are taken in England and Wales, a report has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who are now considering whether to bring charges. The attitude of the complainant is relevant but only at a level of whether it will make a conviction more likely. The complainant cannot either insist that no charges be brought or insist that they are.
(Amesbury has been interviewed under caution so would not need to be arrested before a charging decision)

George Osborne saying this morning that Sunak will remain in the Commons. Caretaker leader when today's winner quits?

No, because he won't be there by then, and no because gfor the Tories to displace yet another leader in the next three years would just make them look even more ridiculous in the eyes of the electorate.

Sunak will go to the Lords in four 1/2 years. I hope Gordon Brown does too.

Sunak will go to the Lords in four 1/2 years. I hope Gordon Brown does too. I think there’s a lot to be said for offering a golden parachute and guaranteed status in public life for leaders. Look at Biden. Of course those interviewed in vox pops on BBC news at 6 will find it ‘disgusting’
