Eric Joyce has just tweeted to the effect that the police have said "no further action" after events of 14 March. The low prospects of a Falkirk byelection recede still further.

That includes the likes of Staines as well

Clegg has confirmed investigation by the whips and then Michael Crick @michaellcrick Clegg claimed on LBC that Mike Hancock has been "very, very ill", but Hancock still attended Council of Europe in Strasbourg in January We should note Clegg does a weekly show on LBC now My hearsay is that Mike has had a heart bypass operation this year. I repeat it is hearsay although I thought reliable.

I think he was quoted in one of the press reports as saying he was recovering from bypass surgery

It seems that Nigel Farage is getting slightly excited about Pompey South and winning it

I think Farage is counting his chickens before there's even an egg to hatch.

A by-election in Portsmouth South would be fascinating and unpredictable, although I would actually favour the LD's to hold it based on local organisational strength, as in nearby Eastleigh. It is virtually similar to Eastborne in many ways and if this happened I would not hesitate to forecast a LD hold

lol.. are you going to tell us what it was supposed to say? Portsmouth South is not very like Eastleigh actually, except in as much as the LDs are well organised. The major difference is that there is a more serious core Labour vote and a potential for them to do well. A consequence of this is that a low vote share is needed to win - could be as low as 25%

More to the point, perhaps - what, if anything, is this little flurry of excitement based on??

A consequence of this is that a low vote share is needed to win - could be as low as 25% The labour vote could certainly go up, although by how much is going to depend largely on what sort of UKIP intervention there is. A good campaign for UKIP along with a strong candidate could certainly prevent them moving. If the UKIP campaign is weak, labour could well jump into 2nd place. The lib dems should still be favourites here, their local presence seems strong and well organised. I fear my party could do very badly in this by-election so in a way I hope this one doesn't happen and that Mike Hancock hangs on until 2015.

I realise psephology isn't Nigel's forte, but I would think he's at least aware that Portsmouth doesn't have any elections this year.
