Bloody hell. Dark day indeed. Yes and No. It looks like a loathsome individual is going to get his comeuppance, and just two months after his most disgraceful act. There is much in that which I find joyous. In one way, yes I get it. You won't find a more staunch unionist than I. Born in England, raised in Scotland, I find Donaldson a loathsome, treacherous toad. This however is on a far more reprehensible scale. If he's guilty, IF for the benefit of the mods, I hope they throw the book at him. Literally and figuratively.

Goes without saying that we should tread carefully here, nevertheless I imagine there will be some sort of confirmation of the name soon enough, too high profile for there to not be you'd think

Jamie Bryson has already been tweeting that there's an emergency DUP meeting to find a new leader.

Never a boring Good Friday in Northern Ireland, it seems.

Donaldson has officially resigned as leader of the DUP.

As leader not as an MP, mind you.

I think we can probably assume Lagan Valley will have a different DUP candidate at the next election, though I agree a by-election isn't the most likely outcome here.

As leader not as an MP, mind you. The next election will be too close for him to get back into the party and fight it even if he does get cleared in court

There is much in that which I find joyous. What happened a couple of months ago was a simple acceptance of reality. The stupid acts of the party were in backing Brexit in the first place (no comment on the policy as a whole, but from a NI Unionist perspective) and in voting against Theresa May’s deal and hitching their wagon to one of the most untrustworthy men in politics. A couple of months ago their choices were to not get what they wanted on the border and run NI’s services into the ground or to not get what they wanted on the border and participate in the governance of the province.

From arrested to charged within a day. Other cases have dragged on for months of investigations before any charges have been brought. I don't know if the difference is in how the N.I. justice system works, or in the substance of the evidence.

Speaking of that decision Jamie Bryson keeps strongly hinting on Twitter that Sir Jeffrey’s enthusiasm for the deal negotiated and returning to the Assembly may have been related to some sort of deal or blackmail in relation to this
Bit too conspiracy theorist for me albeit the timing is interesting as an investigation must have been happening while those talks were ongoing

Yeah. I might be a bit naive, but I don't buy his schtick that the PM would have been told weeks ago. It just doesn't work like that. The PM is, for all intents and purposes, an MP. He isn't an American President who is basically an elected medieval king.

Given that both No 10 and the PSNI leak like sieves, the theory that this would have been widely known beforehand is simply not credible.
