It's true - first reported by Paul Waugh, now by the BBC.
Just to remind everyone he's not a Labour MP.

Given the amount of alcohol-related disorder he's been involved in without feeling the need to resign over the years, this would have to be pretty bad for a by-election to result.

Guido reporting that Eric Joyce has been arrested for an "altercation with cops" outside a pub. That's "bar brawl MP Eric Joyce" to give him his full name. BBC is reporting he's been arrested, but not that he's resigned his seat. Fair enough, because if he's only just been nicked I imagine his first thought wasn't "Never mind my solicitor, I must write to George Osborne and apply for the Manor of Northstead". Given this is the part of the forum for actual by-elections, and your track record (hem Portsmouth South hem), Kris, perhaps you want to set up a "By-elections: rumours and rampings" thread?

If this turns out to be a damp squib too, I'll merge it with the Portsmouth thread into a 'rumoured' thread. EDIT Oh what the hell, let's just do it now. I can make another Falkirk thread if he does actually resign.

In all honesty the Eric Joyce saga is a rather sad one. Clearly the man is unfit to hold public office but he obviously has genuine problems that could probably be best dealt with away from the public eye.

I think he's best kept away from the public's eyes

I agree with Richard.
If Eric Joyce has alcohol dependency issues, and from this comes bouts of violence and anger, then the last place he needs to be is at Westminster. I appreciate that there are stories going back centuries of the wheels of governance being smoothed by a drink or twelve, but that culture doesn't fit for everyone.
(Of course, he might not have either of the things I've stated, so *It is my belief that.......*)

Joyce needs to be 'recalled' for his own sake.

Who was serving him drinks? I would have thought he would have been banned from all HoC bars?
Without any form of criticism for their behaviour, I think the labour party should be, if they aren't already, trying to look after him rather than dropping like a hot stone. We don't want another Fiona Jones. Thats the way it is going at the moment.

I think he is still friendly with many Labour MPs but alcohol counselling is not a function of a political party. PS anyone remember Iain Mills?

WRT Joyce and the Labour Party, it's also worth noting that the glee from the local CLP when he went independent was palpable. I don't think that he was a valued MP one minute, then dropped like a hot stone because of his actions. I think it's more that the local CLP wanted nothing to do with him and had been shunning him for years, and that him going independent just allowed them to publicise what was already happening.

Labour probably need to select in Falkirk pretty soon. However, they are currently embroiled in one of their AWS sagas with constant briefing (likely by 2 camps considering the tone of the articles) to the Sunday Herald included. Unite is allegedly pushing for an AWS because their favourite choice is a lady (Karie Murphy, former Scottish Labour Executive Committee Chair and apparently now working for Tom Watson). Unite paid for a survey among members asking their opinions on a potential AWS. Her main rivals Linda Gow (former council leader) and Gregor Poynton (currently Blue State Digital's Political Director UK, he previously worked for Catherine Stihler MEP and as Election Strategy Manager for the British Labour Party. Husband of Gemma Doyle MP) used this to write a joint letter to members proclaming their strong support for an open shortlist. www.heraldscotland.com/mobile/politics/political-news/union-accused-of-bid-to-stitch-up-labour-contest.20395533

Falkirk must be the SNP's best (maybe only) hope of a gain from Labour in 2015. Do the local party really want to be holding a full scale civil war in the press?

He was the MP for Meriden who died a few months before the 1997 General Election. I am guessing his death was caused by or related to alcohol .
