Since Lassalle is a nonentity with virtually no support, how come he can get 500 nominations so easily? He was a rural mayor for decades, his whole thing is about defending rural villages, so rural and mountain mayors love him.

Does he need to officially declare? I don't know what the process is but if he's got the supporter signatures (and if there's a particular consent for her needs to sign, does so), wouldn't he just appear on the ballot paper? The Conseil has to make sure the candidates are willing (they probably just contact them to do that) and the candidate has to send to the Conseil a "déclaration de situation patrimoniale, une déclaration d'intérêts et d'activités", which is a list of all their lands assets, bank accounts, sources of income and so on. Very interesting, thank you. I'm sure there's some corner of the great French state bureaucracy that could sort all of that without it having to come within half a mile of his presidential desk.

His declaration is already pretty much written, as the President has to publish a new one every December (here's the last one www.legifrance.gouv.fr/jorf/id/JORFTEXT000044454045 , as you can see, it's extremely detailed).

Roussel is currently fighting allegations that he was paid for a fictious job.

The Times is reporting that Marine Le Pen is openly worrying she will not get to 500 parrainages by the deadline, a fear apparently shared by Éric Zemmour. The totals haven't been updated since the weekend. The last regional and departmental elections cost her up to 192 likely parrainages plus her party does not directly hold that many mayor seats.

Perhaps she - and/or Zemmour and/or Melenchon - will after all be saved by Bayrou and his free signatures for anyone polling above 10%...

I haven’t got time for Le Pen or that brand of politics but it does seem a strange system where she could be excluded from the ballot despite clearly having a significant level of support in the country

Most probably 11 candidates : Macron Pecresse Hidalgo Arthaud Roussel Lassalle Jadot Mélenchon Zemmour Dupont-Aignan Le Pen

There will be another publication on thursday, but forms can still arrive until friday. The constitutional council will then proceed to really validate candidacies. These publications didn't validate the candidacies officially

Did he get a gift from the ones Bayrou was keeping back? I did wonder. It would be odd for such a huge number to be given to Zemmour but relatively few to Le Pen (or maybe she refused to be given a leg up??). But then it also would be odd for Putin invading Ukraine to trigger a flood of mayoral support for the most pro-Putin candidate.
