I should add that this wasn't universal. Latino turnout in Nevada appears to have been strong (maybe because Cortez Masto was on the ballot) and turnout in Philadelphia was very good.

It has been asked above whether anyone feels they should apologise to @pjones, and even before that I was wondering if I should say something about this Freeview at home so probably BBC TV or Radio depending on where I am and what time it is. But obviously I will be on line here to get the benefit of Richard Allen's punditry (and ok I'll admit it I really really want to see how @pjones reacts if it - as I sincerely hope and expect - doesn't quite go his way) I am a little embarrassed by this - partly because I got it wrong (though I was not alone in that- and this was the first and only time I broke my rule of not predicting results) but also because it was rather uncalled for and would have been whatever the result. So I apologise for that. Apart from that wishing him discomfiture I don't think that I have been personally unpleasant to him. What I have been, both in the privacy of my thoughts and sometimes (especially before I blocked him) on this site is critical of much of the material he chose to post. I make no apology for that - some of it was pretty vile and it remains so, even if it was successfully vile. I think I underestimated how effective that sort of stuff would be (or overestimated the decency of the electorate) - and before anyone comes out with crap about 'it was all about the establishment not listening to the downtrodden', if that was all Trump needed to do to win, then the stuff about (for example) Clinton's health's is the more despicable for being gratuitous. So congratulations for calling it correctly and thank you for the insight into the minds of (at least some of) Trump's supporters - you are clearly more in touch with that sort of person than I am

Moral of the story: Never underestimate the power of stupid people. I think it is more the exact opposite. Moral of the story: Never underestimate the power of the people to see through stupid, venal politicians.

I'm not going to apologise for my views on who would win. As that well known sage Channel Four's horseracing correspondent Jim McGrath once said "If you don't have an opinion you won't be wrong."

I'm pretty sure Parris was expressing that view before Trump Yes there has always been a very superior being locked up in him sneering often at his own side. He is a type of Emily Thornberry who could even utter "The decent small Metropolitan minority have totally lost confidence in the electorate."

Moral of the story: Never underestimate the power of the people to see through stupid, venal politicians. There are probably a number of reasons for Trump's victory, but the ability of people to see through a candidate who is stupid and venal is demonstrably not one of them. You might be on to something with your final word. Trump seems to have convinced voters that he is not a politician at all, and therefore somehow by definition purer.

I'm surprised just how sorry I'm feeling for Hillary Clinton following her defeat as a matter of fact, more so than other defeated political leaders of the past both in the UK and across the pond. At some point or another Trump is going to meet Theresa May. It will be interesting to see how they get along! You are on your own there mate. Why on earth be sorry for her of all bloody people?

Trump is demonstrably venal, but is he stupid? I wouldn't consider him to be an intellectual, but he has a powerful political instinct and an emotional connection to certain sections of the American electorate. That is a particular type of intelligence, which few politicians have. (Perhaps that's one reason why many people didn't view him as a 'politician'?) I suspect many of his supporters did see through him, incidentally. They just didn't care enough.

I was attempting to show that it was not just one side that had been 'seen through' as certain sections seem to paint Trump as a monster and Clinton as a saint. In fact I don't think Trump was 'seen through' at all because he was just accepted for what he is, warts and all, for the blunt instrument that served their purpose. But Hilary really was seen through on many levels and found very, very wanting.

And now onto the Austrian election abd the Italian election... The Austrian presidential election looks like a miniature version of the US one: populist rightwinger versus uninspiring liberal centrist who's way past it. Anyone got any idea what percentage of the electorate non-college left-behind whites make up?
