BASILDON Pitsea North West Stuart Terson (Conservative) 794 Aidan McGurran (Labour) 430 Jake Hogg (Basildon Community Residents Party) 82 Martin Keith Howard (Liberal Democrats) 57 Daniel Charles Raymond Tooley (Reform UK) 23 Christopher David Bateman (The For Britain Movement) 19 Not the greatest result ever for Labour. Not even a particularly strongly Hindu area (~1%), and even less so Jewish (~0.5%). Labour don't even have the excuse of being in government and having to make difficult decisions that annoy people. I wonder what the brave knight of Holborn can do to reconnect with ordinary people in normal counties like Essex. 13% turnout doesn’t tell us much, Labour defended the seat in May, albeit with a swing to the Conservatives, and both the successful Conservative and the defeated Labour candidates stood in May, the latter winning one of the two seats in the County Division covering the Ward, so it just seems like a general shrug of the shoulders by-election with the Conservatives edging the GOTV operation such as it was on such a low turnout. It’s noticeable that I can’t find one campaigning Tweet using the Ward hashtag on Twitter, which is very unusual as somebody usually posts something about the brilliant response on the doorstep, or even vote x to stop y.

Turnout was 14.9% not 13% (against 25.4% in May) but that does not change the thrust of your post.

Reading Andrew's previews, it seems the Tory candidate organises the local fete, while the Labour incumbent took his bat home only a month after being elected in what looks like a fit of pique at not being council leader any more. That is a sure way to keep your voters at home

There is a limit to how well Labour can ever do with people who are clearly right wing. Having said that, the turnout was very low and perhaps a more important question is why they don't seem able to enthuse those who do intend to vote for them. Clue. It begins with S, ends with R, and has TARME in the middle.

A NIMBY election by the look of it. Please build houses to deal with the housing shortage, but put them somewhere else.

The Tories because they capitalised on the dissatisfaction within Labour to sneak through and win. Labour because the disloyal defector could not be allowed to win. Helen Richards because Labour are weaker on the Council to push the development through and she showed her personal vote was stronger than the Labour party brand.

First time I can recall all by-elections changing hands when there are multiple contests

A real musical chairs week- all 5 elections producing a change of hands, nobody able to defend. Sign of the times?

Somebody can probably tell me, but it does feel like the percentage of seats changing hands has increased significantly recently. I think there is, as previously noted, a general swing against the party that is currently forming the administration in all councils ( Basildon is an exception last night) because I would argue that it’s pretty difficult and unusual for a council to be popular.

Generally this seems to be a vote against incumbency, and of course we had two actual incumbents fighting unnecessary elections last night?
